Since Froyo was open-sourced last week, the number one question that people have asked is “Will my G1 get Froyo?” I’d love to give an emphatic ‘yes’ or ‘no’ as a reply, but carrier flip-flopping and silence on these issues makes that impossible.

However, comments from Google team members make it seem highly unlikely that the G1 will get Android 2.2, and no one should be surprised by this. After all, two major Android updates have passed since the G1 received Android 1.6, and T-Mobile hasn’t applied either update to the phone. They’ve been eerily silent on the issue, repeating the company line that it’s “Exploring options” whenever someone asked. Some sites are reporting that there’s a slight chance that the HTC Dream could be upgraded based on the following comments from Android team member Jean-Baptiste Queru.

We’ve also incorporated into the core platform all the configuration files necessary to build the source code of Android Open-Source Project on its own. You can now build and boot a fully open-source system image out of the box, for the emulator, as well as for Dream (ADP1), Sapphire (ADP2), and Passion (Nexus One).

I wouldn’t consider that a ringing endorsement that Froyo could officially come to the G1 (HTC Dream); it’s just saying that the source code for Froyo makes it possible to build a ROM that could fit on the phone. We’ve always known that since custom ROM-makers have been building their own Android flavors that fit on the G1, usually through removing features and portions of the software. Carriers are less likely to take that approach, making it tough to think T-Mobile will be able to get Android 2.2 onto the first Android phone.

Watch this video from Google I/O addressing this very issue and you’ll see why chances are slim – really slim – that early adopters will be able to get Froyo without rooting their phone and installing a third-party ROM.

It seems that Rogers has (temporarily) stopped the sales of the HTC Dream due to issues with 911 calling. Current Dream owners were said to have been contacted by way of a text message directly from Rogers, but just in case you are curious or missed that message, the text read;

“URGENT 911 Calls: Please disable GPS location on your HTC Dream device to ensure all 911 calls complete. HTC is urgently working on a software upgrade and we will provide details shortly so you can re-enable GPS.”

Luckily that is easy enough to take care off. In order to disable the GPS location, simply navigate to Settings -> Location and then uncheck “Enable GPS Satellite.”

According to Rogers, the only device that was/is affected is the Dream and they are working to release a fix “shortly.”

I should begin this post by making it extra clear that this is just a rumor, and a rumor that does not seem to have much basis.

And now that we have that out of the way, if we can believe this latest rumor train, then it looks like T-Mobile G1 owners are going to be a very happy bunch. Yup, the rumor is calling for T-Mobile to be preparing to roll out Android 2.0, or 2.0.1 to the G1.

The details are coming courtesy of AndroidSPIN, who have received the tip rumor by way of an “anonymous source” and unfortunately have not even given us a clue as to whether this tipster should be trusted.

Bottom line, we may, or may not be seeing the G1 get Android 2.0.

What’s so budget about the HTC Click to make HTC’s upcoming device an “entry-level” Android phone? Take a look at this video, apparently shot in an Asian restaurant judging by the language and noise in the background, and you’ll see not much on the surface. It’s still running the Android operating system, comes with standard smartphone features, and even one-ups the G1 and Magic/myTouch with a 3.5mm audio jack?

One thing you will notice in this video, however, is that the screen size is relatively small when compared to the HTC Magic. But, the material looks sound, the trackball big and comfortable, and we already know the platform is nice. Depending on processing speed and how well it performs, the Click might surprise a few people. The Click is first scheduled to be released by Dopod in China.

In what sounds like a logical move, especially considering T-Mobile is planning to roll out their second Android handset in “early summer” it looks like the G1 will be getting a price cut.

As of this coming Friday (June 5, 2009) T-Mobile will be lowering the price on the G1 from $179.99 down to $149.99. Initially I thought this was a great deal, sure the G1 is about to have a second Android phone to compete with, but $30 off is still a nice discount. Of course, I then remembered (and verified) that you are still able to get a G1 on Amazon for $97.99.

A few days back we saw the leaked roadmap that highlighted some of the new Android goodies that we have to look forward to, one of which was the G1 v.2 Bigfoot. At the time, the roadmap offered just a small image that made it difficult to really appreciate. Now, the Boy Genius Report has turned up a nicer and larger image of Bigfoot.

Originally, I thought that it was taking the look of a Helio Ocean 2, however after seeing the large image it sort of has an iPhone look to it. Of course, whatever it looks like, I will say that it does look much nicer than the current G1. Still, I am going to hold judgment until I am able to see it in person and get some hands on time. While the keyboard looks nice, it may not be as nice to use.

In addition to the image, BGR has also gone on record saying that the G1 v.2 will sell for $149.99 with a two-year agreement and hit sometime in October. And now, the wait for more Android phones continues…

Effective immediately, Wal-Mart customers will be able to grab a G1 for just $98.88, which is about a buck more than Amazon. Of course, in order to get that price you will need to sign on with a 2-year agreement.

As of now, there has not been any mention on how long this price will last. Looks like now is just about as good of time as any to get going with Android, that is unless you are the person who needs the latest and greatest — in that case I would suggest holding off for a little while.

The T-Mobile G1 is moving on up in terms of smartphone sales here in the US. According to the most recent Smartphone Market Update report from the NPD Group, the G1 is now sitting in the number five slot.

RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)

Apple iPhone 3G (all models)

RIM BlackBerry Storm

RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)

T-Mobile G1

Overall, I would say this is a pretty decent accomplishment. It means they were able to beat out some other big names such as Microsoft and Symbian. Of course, they also came in higher than Palm, but I cannot offer any real surprise or congratulations there.

Unfortunately, while we have been given a look at the ranks, we have not seen any sales numbers. Another interesting to note is that the iPhone has lost the number one spot. Yup, the BlackBerry Curve 83xx has taken over. Of course, the iPhone has not fallen far as it is now listed as number two. It should be pointed out though, that at least part of the popularity of the Blackberry models can be attributed to the recent buy-one-get-one offers that Verizon has been running.

Now, if we could just see a few more Android handsets come to market here in the US. Then maybe the overall popularity of Android would catch on and we could see the G1 move on up even further.

It was just recently that we saw the announcement from T-Mobile USA and how they have reached the 1 million mark with the G1, and now it looks like T-Mobile UK has some good news — they are closing in on the 100,000 mark. According to Richard Warmsley, Head of Internet and Entertainment, T-Mobile;

“Sales of the T-Mobile G1 have exceeded our expectations – we are very excited to hit the milestone of 100,000 units sold in just over six months.”

All things considered, 100,000 in six months is a pretty impressive number. Of course, I would imagine that will only grow, possibly even quicker now that Cupcake has begun to roll-out. Also, as you would imagine, it would appear that T-Mobile UK is excited about Android in general and plan to ride that success for a while.

“We’re looking forward to launching another groundbreaking phone on Android later this year.”

The recent Q1 financial announcement from T-Mobile ultimately did not offer up the best of news, however there was one nice bit that was included. That news was that T-Mobile has officially sold one million G1′s.

Sure, one million may not be as large a number when it is compared to some other phones, but keep in mind that T-Mobile is not the largest carrier, not to mention their 3G network is still just beginning. If you remember, when the G1 launched this past October T-Mobile only had 21 major markets that were 3G. Of course, since then we have seen several rounds of expansion.

Additionally, it was also noted that T-Mobile has about 1.5 million devices using their 3G network, which means that the G1 has about 67% of the network.
