AT&T has followed Verizon’s lead and introduced its own set of shared data plans. But unlike Verizon, AT&T won’t force customers to switch to one of those shared plans.

Beginning in August, the AT&T Mobile Share plans will give customers the option of having up to 10 devices on one account that share the same data allotment. Customers will pay at least $40 per month for 1 GB of data, and an additional $45 per phone connected to the line. Unlimited calling and texting is included in the plan. As customers move to a higher tier of data, they pay less per GB and get a lower price on smartphone charges. The highest tier available is 20 GB for $200 and $30 per phone.

AT&T subscribers, like Verizon users before them, are likely to quickly discover that these “deals” will penalize them for trying to watch video, stream music, or download content very quickly. However, customers will not be forced onto these plans yet. AT&T’s current individual and family plans are still available, and “current customers are not required to switch to the new plans,” according to today’s announcement. How long that will be true remains to be seen, but for now, Mobile Share is an option rather a requirement.

“With these new plans, the more you share, the more you save. They’ll be a good fit for a variety of new and existing customers. But if customers want to stay on their current plan or choose from our existing plans, they can do that, too. It’s their choice.”
