Skype has just crowned itself “the most popular video calling application on Android.” I know a few people who would argue that there are better apps out there, but the numbers are hard to argue against as far as which app is most used. According to a company announcement, and the numbers listed in the Google Play Store, Skype for Android has been downloaded more than 70 million times on more than 1,300 types of Android devices.

That Skype would be the most popular video calling option is not surprising. The company has unmatched brand recognition for video calling on the desktop, so it’s only natural that it would also prove to be the most downloaded option on mobile as well. (Kudos for apps like Tango and fring for even managing to compete with more than 10 million downloads.)

The 1,300 device part is what really caught my eye. Seeing a parade of Android phones and tablets pass my desk and at conferences over the past four years has been amazing, but the scale of how many are out there is truly surprising. I lost track of how many different phone models are in existence and was surprised to learn that Skype supports that many.

In fact, Skype runs on 1,384 “unique Android devices” to be exact. HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony naturally account for most of those models, but there are many companies of less notoriety contributing to that number as well. Skype has published an infographic detailing the most popular devices and languages using the app, as well as showing the timeline for popularity.
