Looking to build upon the success of the original Kindle Fire, Amazon is rumored to launch a successor to the 7 inch tablet.  For intents and purposes, I will refer to the device as the Kindle Fire 2, although Amazon has not publicly confirmed the existence of said device.

According to a report by CNET citing a “credible source,” Amazon will be hosting an event on July 31 to showcase the new Kindle Fire tablet.  With this in mind, it is likely the Kindle Fire 2 will launch later this summer, after its late July announcement.  Further, Amazon looks to keep it at the same $199 price tag while dropping the original Kindle Fire to $149.

In addition, the source mentions the presence of a camera, physical volume-controls, and at least 8GB of storage.  Amazon could potentially add a microSD slot for added memory, but that has yet to be confirmed.  Previous rumors that couldn’t be confirmed by the source claimed the Kindle Fire 2 would have a 7 inch 1280 x 720 resolution display.

At this point in time, the Kindle Fire 2 looks like a guaranteed tablet to launch in 2012, but we’re going to have to wait for official confirmation from Amazon as to an event taking place on July 31.
