Even though the Xperia S, P and U weren’t exactly received with flowers by the vast majority of technology enthusiasts, as neither of the three smartphones doesn’t pack a quad-core processor or runs Android ICS out of the box, the guys at Sony are more stubborn than ever and have just enriched the Xperia family with another member.
The Xperia Sola, thought to be a US-specific version of the Xperia S a while back, is a device of its own after all, even though it doesn’t come with any technical breakthroughs or innovative features. Sporting a 3.7-inch TFT LCD display with 854 x 480 pixels resolution, the Sola will be powered by a dual-core 1 GHz NovaThor processor.
The chip is the same one powering the 3.5-inch Xperia U and 4-inch Xperia P, so the Xperia Sola should bring the same amount of power and speed as the two on a display that nicely fits between them.
In terms of software, the Sola will unfortunately run Android 2.3 Gingerbread for starters and should upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich sometime during the summer. Other features include a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with auto focus, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, 3D surround sound audio technology, NFC SmartTags, as well as full access to the Sony Entertainment Network.
Same old, same old you could say by looking at this smartphone’s spec sheet, but the guys at Sony have actually added one (small) touch of originality after all. The Xperia Sola will therefore be the first smartphone to come with ‘’floating touch navigation for magic web browsing without touching the screen’’.
Hmm, that sounds a bit corny to me and might just be an advertising scheme to draw some attention from technology enthusiasts, but then again it might actually be something original and innovative. And God knows, we desperately need originality from time to time!
The Sony Xperia Sola will be made available in black, white and red sometime in Q2 (that could be anytime from April Fools to the end of June) at a yet to be specified price. Don’t forget to check out Sony’s full press release below to find out everything there is to know about the Sola.
