If when talking about smartphones Samsung has pretty much managed to close the gap between its products and Apple’s iPhones, when it comes to portable media players, the iPod is still the undisputed champion.
However, the latest Samsung entry to the PMP market, the Galaxy S WiFi 4.2, might be a game changer, even though it doesn’t come with the tech specs and features to be actually called a high-end gadget.
Sporting a 4.2-inch WVGA IPS TFT screen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution, the Galaxy S WiFi 4.2 has been made official at the MWC in Barcelona, but doesn’t yet have a price tag or release date attached to its name.
Powered by a 1 GHz processor (most likely a single-core, even though we are still unsure of that), the WiFi 4.2 comes with dual cameras (a 2 MP rear-facing one and a VGA front-facing webcam) and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a bunch of customizations and added services, including the Samsung HUB, the ChatON mobile communication service and the Samsung SmartView remote control application.
The PMP features 512 MB of RAM and will come in two versions, with either 8 or 16 GB of on-board memory. In both cases, you will also get a microSD card slot for expanding the memory, so you don’t have to worry much as far as storage space goes.
The rest of the features are pretty much on-par with what you would expect from such a gadget and include Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, a gyroscope, accelerometer and digital compass. However, the guys at Samsung have thrown in the Need for Speed Hot Pursuit game preloaded, which is not much, I’ll give you that, but is a very nice touch and might draw a few interested customers. After all, the street racing game goes for around seven bucks on the Android Market right now.
As I already mentioned, the latest Samsung PMP is yet to have a release date and price attached to its name, but that should change pretty quick. Stay tuned for more details set to unravel soon, but also for other exciting products to launch in Barcelona!
