What’s the name of that phone with a projector in it? The Samsung Galaxy Beam. Samsung today announced the Galaxy Beam as an Android phone that would allow users to share video, photos, and presentations anywhere using only their phone and a display-friendly screen or wall.

Readers may recall a similar a phone announced at MWC 2010, but it never really materialized or received much attention . This time around, Samsung hopes a smartphone industry that has since tried everything from 3D and dual-screens to tablet-size phones might be interested in an Android phone that projects images onto a wall.

In its press release announcing the Samsung Galaxy Beam, Samsung highlights the following possible scenarios in which you may be happy to have a projector in your pocket.

With GALAXY Beam, a birthday or anniversary party can be enlivened in seconds by sharing YouTube or Hulu music videos straight onto a ceiling or door. Likewise, students can collectively share videos or study-work in any dormitory room or student lounge, turning group study into a whole new interactive experience right from a desk table or from the palm of their hands.

GALAXY Beam is also ideal for action-packed interactive gaming: Users can upload their own games or choose from over 1,000 games available via Game Hub, Samsung’s dedicated virtual gaming store, then project games to co-players or observers to turn gaming into an unbeatably interactive, shared experience. Additionally, GALAXY Beam is convenient tool for mid-sized business workers. An estate agent can beam images of candidate properties to customers as they tour them; or an architect can display draft concepts or designs to co-workers on the spot at a building site or public location.

The question is, will people really flock to this device? Can a Gingerbread phone with a lot of RAM and a built-in projector become the kind of Android phone spotted in office halls and birthday parties on a regular basis? Take a look at the specs and then come up with a prediction in the comments section.
