Softbank 102P

Practically each beginning of the week we are bombarded with product releases and unveilings from Asia and especially from Japan. And while most of these gadgets have no chance in hell to become hits in the United States or Europe, as it is the case of the Xvision an4 for example, there are usually one or two devices every other week that look great and make us all drool for them.

This week the Asian gadget with the most chances of selling in the US is clearly the Panasonic Softbank 102P, a super-slim and ultra-thin dual-core smartphone. Even though it won’t be the world’s thinnest smartphone, the Softbank 102P looks great and is set to be as light as a feather.

Weighing in at 103 grams (3.63 ounces), the 102P measures 7.8 mm (0.3 inches) thick. That’s very, very close to the Huawei Ascend P1 S, the smartphone marketed and advertised as the world’s thinnest right now.

The Softbank 102P is certainly dressed to impress, but that doesn’t mean the guys at Panasonic have neglected the power and hardware. On the contrary, because under the hood you get a dual-core 1 GHz TI OMAP 4430 processor, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage space.

The 4.3-inch display sported by the future Japanese smartphone will feature a 960 x 540 pixels resolution and the handheld, while slim and light, should be functional as well, with a waterproof and dustproof body.

The rest of the features are pretty impressive themselves, with an 8.2 megapixel CMOS back-illuminated camera on the back of the device, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 and 3G connectivity, as well as accelerometer, GPS, digital compass and a pretty strong battery that should hold for more than five hours in talk time.

As far as software goes, the 4.3-incher will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and, even though there’s no word yet on an official update, I’m sure that it will have a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich soon enough.

Intrigued? Well, I for one am really intrigued, which is why I’m going to watch this smartphone closely as soon as it will be released in Asia (in early March, according to official sources), so as to see how will it be priced and if it will ever come to the US of A. I certainly believe that it could be a hit in America, but then again you never know the desire of the public…
