Android Phones, Rumors, Sony Mobile

The 2012 MWC event in Barcelona next week should be an exciting one for several important technology manufacturers, but Sony might well have the leading role. At least two Korean Android-based smartphones should be unveiled in Spain and, while we’ve seen a couple of leaked photos of the two before, one of them gets the spotlight today as it deserves.

The Sony Xperia U, also known as the ST25i or the Kumquat, is shown in several high definition leaked photos and practically leaves almost nothing to mystery. The 3.5-incher is shown next to the larger Sony Xperia S, a smartphone unveiled just a while back and set to hit the market as soon as next month.

For those of you who have missed the past few weeks of rumors, leaks and speculations, let’s quickly recap all the things we know (or think we know) about the Xperia U. The Sony smartphone should sport a 3.5-inch screen with 854 x 480 pixels resolution and feature a 1 GHz dual-core processor, as well as a 5 MP rear-facing camera with auto focus.

We still have no idea whether the Xperia U will run Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich, but I for one would guess it will come with the former, at least at the time of its release. Release that should take place sometime in April, if we are to believe the Sony 2012 launch schedule leaked about a month ago.

Getting back to today’s photos, the Xperia U seems set to feature a pretty elegant overall design, which in most part is very similar to its bigger brother, the Xperia S. It’s also very good to see that, unlike its sibling, the Xperia U will feature a removable battery (even though it’s just a 1290 mAh unit). Other than that, it looks very compact, stylish and pretty much as thin as the Xperia S, so the U might well be one of the medium-range Android smartphones to watch for in 2012.

On the other hand, I would like to say what I always say when talking about leaks, rumors and speculations, which is have a little patience and wait for the gadget to become official and to see what it can do in reality before getting overly excited.

You can take a look at all of today’s leaked pics below (if you don’t get bored halfway):
