SEGA has just announced that it’s iconic character Sonic the Hedgehog is returning to Android in an all new game. And it’s coming back in a major way.
Sonic CD debuted on Android long ago, offering a nostalgic way to play the classic game. In Sonic 4: Episode II, the hyperactive hedgehog will get all new graphics, animations, and a new physics engine. NVIDIA & SEGA have collaborated to create a version optimized for Tegra processors, so there’s sure to be an impressive upgrade in the graphics rendering department. Tegra 2 devices will be able to play the game, but an Tegra 3-specific version of the game will offer even more enhancements.
As for the side-scrolling and coin-grabbing action that made Sonic great, that’s still there, of course. SEGA says that this version will continue the storyline of Sonic 4 and make sure that it doesn’t depart far from what already works.
“The first entry in the Sonic 4 saga was a major success,” says Haruki Satomi, SVP of digital business at SEGA of America. “We’ve listened to the fans and been hard at work making sure we recapture that same spirit of fun in Episode II. We hope the fans will enjoy it.”
Sonic 4: Episode 2 will arrive at a yet-to-be-named date in 2012. We’ll be sure to circle back once that happens. In the meantime, you can watch the teaser that doesn’t show any gameplay but gets the hype train rolling.
