Acer Iconia Tab A200 finally gets official

Acer officially announced the launch of its new 10.1 inch Android tablet the Acer Iconia Tab A200 which will be running Nvidia’s Tegra 2 dual core platform. Acer has been making many versions of its Iconia line, including a 7-inch tab as of the last few months. This new Iconia slate will ship with the latest Honeycomb operating system (Android 3.2), but will quickly be updated in the first month of the new year to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). Acer said shipments of the tablet started in November to select countries. The A200 will carry some pretty respectable features, which include:
- 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor
- 1GB of RAM with option for 8Gb or 16GB of storage
- Standard 1280 x 800 screen resolution
- Built in UI layer called the “Acer Ring,” which improves multitasking
- DLNA capabilities
- USB port and MicroSD slot
- 2 MP front facing camera
The Iconia Tab A200 doesn’t have a rear-facing camera, which isn’t important to me but could be a deal-breaker for others. Now this clearly misses the boat when compared to the upcoming Transformer Prime tablet on just about every specification. The Prime’s slim 8.3mm frame only weighs 586gm, where as the A200 tab packs a much thicker 260 x 175 x 12.4 mm frame and a heftier 720 grams in weight. Also, the Prime will be the first Android tablet to sport NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor.
I’m not trying to diss the A200 but it’s going to be a small fish in a big pond of Android slates powered with Tegra 3 processors in the next couple of months.

I'm having a hard time figuring out how this differs from the A500 except for the Camera and 9 months. Maybe they are positioning it to sell for $199 or something, and are going to make the A700 the top end device at $499 and place the refreshed A500 in between at $350. That's the only thing that makes sense (at least until you factor in the A100). I guess they are trying to tier their tablets like regular PCs, and this will be the cheapest of the bunch. I'm sure there is a plan somewhere. I wish they would let us know what it is, because this looks bizarre.
Pretty sure that geeks and non geeks alike are not interested in last years tech presented as this years. Even if the price is cheaper than prime, it would still make more sense to get the original Acer Iconia tab for even less. I have already seen them for $249.
