I’ve lost track of the number of running apps available on Android, so it’s always refreshing when one of them does something to stand out from the pack. An upcoming app known as Zombies, Run! does just that by turning what could be a mundane run into an interactive audio story.
Zombies, Run! is being developed as both a running app and a game compatible with tracks, city streets, and even treadmills. A zombie apocalypse is under way and it’s up to the user to help rebuild the city by obtaining certain items (medicine, weapons, etc.) by going on missions. The items are collected automatically while you run, and then assigned by you when your run is finished.
There’s commentary during or after runs that reveal why you’re running for your life, and there are plenty of missions to keep you moving. And while the story/game aspect of the app is what most interests me, there’s still a very solid running app itching to emerge from Zombies, Run! According to the Kickstarter page, developers plan to add RunKeeper integration, multiplayer support so you can work with friends, and a data export/web tool.
The problem is that this won’t arrive until next year. The Kickstarter has been successfully funded, but it won’t arrive until May 2012 once an iPhone app is complete. I’ll probably forget all about this app by then, but I hope that’s a conservative date that can be pushed up. If you’re interested in donating to this project – already successfully-funded, visit the Kickstarter page.
