Samsung has announced the Galaxy Note, a new Android device that pushes the boundary of what qualifies as a phone and how big a device must be to enter the realm of tablets. The Galaxy Note features a 5.3-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen with 180 degree viewing angles. That means you’ll be able to watch a YouTube video while staring directly at the screen, and people crowded around you will also be able to comfortably see cats doing something cute.

The super-sized screen has a WXGA resolution (1280×800, 285ppi) so users should experience decent quality. It will also go along well with the special S Pen input technology. A digital stylus is tucked away into the phone’s 9.65 mm frame, allowing users to make handwritten notes or drawings that are stored on the phone. A special S Memo application then makes it possible to record audio, typed text, pictures and screen caps with annotations, and doodles in one place. I originally suspected that the Note would offer these features in tablet form to take on the HTC Flyer, but Samsung has opted to make this input style more portable.

Familiar specs of Samsung’s current generation of products appear in the Galaxy Note. Enterprise options are available through SSL VPN and corporate device management, and the Samsung TouchWiz & Live Panel UX elements appear on top of Android 2.3. Expect to see this phone/tablet behemoth popping up on HSPA+ and LTE networks at a yet-to-be-disclosed date.
