New Skype update brings video calling to a slew of handsets

Great news for you Skype users out there. Android’s Skype client just gave itself a sizable update, officially bringing video calling to a number of new devices. Actually, the new version more than doubles the last update that supported a list comprised of just the Nexus S, Xperia neo and Xperia pro, and the Desire S.
A hacked version of the Skype Android app was released that supported several phones with front-facing cameras. This update makes that support official and should provide smoother playback. It’s good to see that Skype is moving a little more quickly when it comes to rolling out its beloved video calling service to the rest of the Android ecosystem.
Checkout the new list of supported devices as indicated below:
- Samsung Galaxy S II
- Samsung Galaxy S
- Samsung Droid Charge – Verizon
- Samsung Galaxy Tab
- HTC Desire (2.2)
- HTC Thunderbolt – Verizon
- HTC Sensation
- HTC Evo 4G
- HTC Evo 3D
- HTC Incredible S
- HTC Desire HD
- HTC Flyer
- LG Revolution – Verizon (2.2)
- Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY
- Sony Ericsson Xperia ray
- Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro
- Acer A5
Now for an important note. If the phone listed above isn’t yet running Gingerbread, only the rear camera will work. The app listing on the Android Market does a great job explaining that’s a Froyo limitation, and not the app’s fault. So please don’t bum-rush Skype with negative feedback on something they clearly explained. (Though other video calling services like Tango work with Froyo, so it must be something unique to Skype causing problems.)
I tried to test this bad boy out on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, but later realized it’s for the older version, that’s lame. Any how, if you haven’t already, go to the Android Market to download the new update or just click our trusty green button below.

Better late than never, I suppose. But my family and I use Fring now. I wouldn't even know who Fring is if it weren't for Skype being so lame toward Android devices.
Gonna try it on my S II now.
