One of my favorite genres of games to play on mobile devices is tower defense. I feel that the touch based controls lend themselves well to a strategy based games, and the newest addition to the Android Market is no exception. Released today, July 7, Fieldrunners HD is a superb tower defense title.
Fieldrunners is a title that many gamers will recognize. It got its start on iOS, and was then ported to the Nintendo DSi, the PSP, and even the PS3. If you are familiar with tower defense, then playing Fieldrunners will seem very natural to you. For those who aren’t, let me give you a little background.
The idea in Fieldrunners, as in any tower defense game, is to defend your base from waves of enemies. You do this buy purchasing defensive units, called towers, and placing them in the play field. As the enemies move past, they are damaged by you towers. if you kill them, you gain money to purchase more units or upgrade your current ones.
The gameplay in Fieldrunners is true to the genre, but that is a good thing. It is the strategies that you can employ that makes Fieldrunners such a fun game. I like to create mazes of towers, which cause ground units to spend more time being damaged. The issue I run into most often are air based units, which fly over my mazes. For them, I lay down rows of rocket launchers and goo shooters, hoping to slow them down enough to destroy them.
My only issue with Fieldrunners is its load time. On my now aging Captivate, it can take anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds to boot into the game. While that’s not horrendous, I would love to see it slimmed down. It’s not really a deal breaker for me though.
You can pickup Fieldrunners HD in the Android Market now for $1. For those lucky few who can access the Amazon App Store, it is currently Free to download.
