Android Hacks

Everyone’s favorite Android developers, Cyanogen, has just released their latest version of its custom ROM – available for most of the officially supported Android phones on the CyanogenMod device list. Before you even think about flashing any .zip file from CM7, make sure you know your devices codename. If you don’t know your codename, then don’t sweat it — you can avoid the whole process by installing the ROM Manager app and (if you don’t already have it) ClockworkMod recovery on your rooted and unlocked handset.

If you’ve been using CM7 for awhile now, pasting the changelog below is pointless. Besides, the only really big change is the jump to Android 2.3.4 (from 2.3.3) – which contains numerous security and bug fixes, including the ability to set app permissions. But with this jump to 2.3.4, I’ve noticed a couple of unnoticed changes when I downloaded the new CyanogenMod 7.1 (Release Candidate 1) on my MyTouch 4G using ROM Manger (of course). Well, for one, my screen seems more responsive — when I’m coming out of sleep mode theirs no lag, the screen pops back on like a blur when I hit either the power button or trackpad. Second, when you hit the menu button — you have easier access to your options like add, edit, manage applications, settings, search and a tab that says ‘more’ — which has Wallpaper and Lock Desktop within it.

Now for the more interesting change, Netflix streaming. I recently wrote my total distain as to how far off Netflix is with distributing its services across all Android devices. In the same article, I also mentioned how great it would be if the guys over at CyanogenMod could deliver Netflix in the near future. Well, that wait didn’t take long — I’ve been able to stream movies since 5:45 AM, albeit, the quality isn’t top notch but having the ability to finally watch movies is awesome. As you can see below, I’ve been watching XXX and loving it!

What about you guys? Have you noticed something new with the latest CM7 ROM that I haven’t mentioned? As always, hit us up in the comment section below!
