The Layar Augmented Reality browser has been around for as long as the smartphone, and it’s still committed to getting better. Layar has announced version 5.0 of their popular app, which adds some cool new features, including:

  • Sharing layers on Facebook or Twitter
  • Animated layers
  • Easier options to add layers to favorites
  • Intro walkthrough of the app

The biggest piece of this update is of course the social aspect of sharing layers and places on Facebook or Twitter. Before this, Layar always seemed a bit gimmicky to me. It was a good app to show off the power of modern smartphones, and get some oohs and aahs from out-of-town friends, but it was never something that I found myself using on a regular basis. There were always better options for discovering things around me that didn’t require me to look as though I’m taking pictures of everything. But, this social aspect makes a difference. The beauty of Layar has always been in the serendipity – the unexpected discoveries, but it was always a pain to share those experiences with others. Now, you can easily share places and layers with friends.

It would be nice if Layar simply tapped into Android’s share menu and allowed you to save addresses, or share via e-mail or SMS, but this is a good start. It’s definitely worth a look if you haven’t played with Layar in a while.
