It’s time to officially get excited, especially if you’re an AT&T customer who has been waiting for a quality Android phone, or if you are carrier agnostic and want an awesome Tegra 2 powerhouse. The Motorola Atrix is ready to hit the streets, and it’s all happening pretty soon.
AT&T announced today that the Motorola Atrix will be starting pre-orders on February 13th, just in time for Valentine’s Day, though I doubt that is part of the marketing scheme. The basic option for the phone will run you the standard $199 with a 2-year plan, or $500 without a plan, but after that is when the math gets a bit tricky. AT&T will also be offering a bundle of the Atrix and the laptop dock for “$499.99 after a two-year service contract and $100 mail-in-rebate after subscription to Data Pro smartphone data plan and tethering add on. Customers who choose to purchase the Motorola Laptop Dock separately pay $499.99.” That means, you have to sign up for both a 2-year contract, plus the extra tethering data plan in order to get the $100 rebate which would make the cost of the bundle $499.99. I’m not exactly sure why you would be forced to buy a tethering plan if you want a laptop dock, but then again, I don’t know why anyone would pay $500 for a laptop dock. Good job, AT&T. You were given a golden opportunity, and you’re on your way to screwing it up.
There will also be an “Entertainment bundle” which packs in the HD dock, a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for $189.99. And, the Atrix will also come with AT&T U-Verse TV pre-loaded, but it’ll set you back $10 a month to access it.
Once all is said and done, AT&T is saying that the Atrix will be available to customers by “March 6th or earlier.”
What do you guys think? Is the Atrix worth it?
