As Andrew showed from MWC, the Xperia Play is looking like a pretty nice phone. We’re finally seeing some of the games coming to Sony’s new phone, but the offering is a bit of a mixed bag.
On the good side, Sony has promised fifty games in total to be launching with the new phone. Gameloft will be making ten games available to the Xperia play: Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Star Battalion, Assassin’s Creed,UNO, Let’s Golf! 2, Spider-Man: Total Mayhem, Modern Combat: Black Pegasus, Real Football 2011, Brothers in Arms 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction. That alone is a pretty solid lineup, especially considering a lot of those games aren’t even available for my Nexus One (a point about which I’ve written many a nasty e-mail to Gameloft.)
Sony will also be offering a number of PSOne classics for the Xperia Play, but that’s where we come to the bad news. For any of you who have already bought any PSOne games from the PSN to play on your PS3 or PSP, you’ll have to buy them again. Sony has confirmed that none of those purchases will be made available to your new phone. This is especially annoying because the PSOne classics on the PSN average about $5 each, so that quickly adds up. This would also seem to imply that unlike with the PS3/PSP, you may not be able to transfer saves from your Xperia Play to your PS3 if you want to keep playing on your console once you get home.
