It was certainly no secret. We all knew that the Motorola Xoom was coming. Now, we finally have the official release notice. Motorola said today that the Xoom tablet will be coming in Q1 of 2011. At first the tablet will be 3G/WiFi enabled, but will have an upgrade to 4G LTE in Q2 2011. Word is that users will be able to bring their Xoom into a Verizon store for the hardware upgrade to LTE once it’s available.
The Motorola Xoom will be the first tablet on the market with Honeycomb, which is looking pretty amazing based on the new video. The official spec sheet lists the Xoom with:
- 1Ghz dual-core Tegra 2 processor
- 10.1 ” 1280X800 display
- 1080p video and HDMI output
- 32 GB internal storage (will need software update for SD support)
- 1 GB DDR2 RAM
- 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, 720p Video capture
- 2 megapixel front-facing camera
- Gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer
It’s looking like a pretty solid start for Android tablets. If it weren’t locked onto Verizon, I’d be pretty excited.

What the big deal about it being locked onto Verizon?
I prefer unlocked GSM devices. I do a fair amount of international traveling, so the Verizon lock means I can't just swap out a SIM card when I head to Canada or Jamaica. Plus, I'm not a big fan of the pricing policies on Verizon.
My money is waiting for either a data plan with unlimited data that I can share between my phone and my tablet or a wifi only version.
i think this is super cool, even pictures are sweet
Yeah, the Verizon data plan is rough … I'm gonna make this my first tablet though … want the phone in Q2 as well.
Okay, Motorola wins! The answer is Obvious. However, will this device also have a choice whether to have 3G contract with VZM or not? Hope we can have that choice.
With a data plan it'll get expensive quite soon (and this is true for any tablet of course). A tablet ain't gonna be my only – or primary – mobile device any time soon hence the recurring cost is not much more than a waste of money. On the bright side, gorgeous as it is, it'll allow me to look straight in the face of a iPad owner and the chances are pretty high I'll get one of these puppies when they are available in WiFi only flavor. I have a Galaxy, no plan just use it at home on WiFi or at hotSpots no problems, will you be able to do this with the XOOM as well. When I got the Galaxy I was told it only worked if you bought a plan, not so as I do not have any monthly plan with it.
