Android Tip O’ The Day: Show/Hide your keyboard with LauncherPro [UPDATED]

One of the most annoying issues in Android land is that there are plenty of times where your keyboard will be hiding something you need to see. It may hide where you are typing, or the next text field you want to get at, or there may just be a bug and your keyboard won’t go away. Earlier, I mentioned that the newest version of SlideIT has a dedicated key to show/hide your keyboard, but there is a better way to show/hide your keyboard and it comes with one of the best launchers in the Market.
First, you would need to install LauncherPro, which I would recommend, since it takes great features from different custom UIs and puts them in one package: HTC Sense-like social widgets, and MotoBlur resizing of widgets. With LauncherPro, no matter where you are in Android, even if there is no reason at all to bring up the keyboard, all you have to do is long-press the menu button on your phone to toggle showing/hiding your keyboard. That’s it! Easy as pie.
For Android users out there who do not have a dedicated search button, this can also be a useful way to perform a quick search. And just so you see just how easy this all is, here’s a video showing the simplicity. My hands are a bit shy, so here’s Andrew to demonstrate (and offer an extra tip!):

Somewhat more helpfully, holding menu also hides the keyboard. Quite often I'll search for something on the web, get the keyboard staying in the way, press back to minimise it and have to type the search in all over again.
Yeah, I say that in the text of the article a number of times. There's more to the post than the video…
Thanks! That will save me much future frustration.
The Back button already provides the functionality of removing the keyboard from view……
Tapping in a text field brings it up…
Just about all I need…. :-/
You can also just swipe downward on the keyboard.
What is the launcher used in the video?
Launcher Pro with a custom dock (can't remember the name)
Sorry, but this does not work on all phones. At least some, maybe all, the Galaxy S phones don't work with holding the menu key.
Definitely doesn't work with the Epic 4G
Does not work on Droid incredible either. However there is a dedicated search key to the far right that will do similar.
Swyping the keyboard down does not work very well all the time. In some cases, the back button takes you back to the previous page (in Dolphin). So this is the best and safest way to hide/unhide the keyboard.
Thanks!
uh … won't work on moto droid
i loved this feature but upon switching to gingerbread no longer see it. hopefully it's back in a future build of cm7
The hold menu feature is defintiely not universal – it doesn't work at all on my HTC Desire Z.
To hide the keyboard all you have to do is press the back button
Oddly enough, I have an EVO (which is what I think you're holding in the video) and it definitely does not work on my phone. The back 'button' is a wonderful thing, hides things, backs up a page, etc., etc. but holding down the menu button only brings up…the menu!
What is with all the comments claiming this does not work on specific phones, RTFA ! It clearly says you need Launcher Pro.
I've got a Motorola Droid with LauncherPro and it doesn't work for me either.
