Tomorrow is Froyo Day for the first wave of Samsung Vibrant owners. After months of wait, the rollover of Android 2.2 will finally begin for users on the T-Mobile USA network. Chief marketing officer Cole Brodman told Sascha Segan of PCMag that users would begin receiving an over-the-air firmware upgrade tomorrow. It will take a few weeks for all Vibrant owners to receive the update as it rolls out in stages.
UPDATE: The firmware upgrade is not taking place in an OTA. It is available only to PC users through the Samsung Kies software. More information is available at T-Mobile.
Brodman also stated that the cause for the delay was making 2.2 mesh well with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI and T-Mobile’s own software. Samsung finished the base of the new update in November, but that was “A quality control and timing issue” during the holidays as T-Mobile worked to customize the phone. This is in contrast with the recent rumors of treachery.
T-Mobile wants to be speed-up its update path, hoping to get phones updated within 3-5 months of public availability. In that scenario, Vibrant owners would have been on Froyo as early as September or in November under the more conservative targets.
