The latest addition to Sony Ericsson’s series of Android devices, the entry-level Xperia X8, is now shipping across the globe. The X8 is meant to be “the most affordable SE Android phone ever”, will cost less than $300 off-contract, and with its release, SE is hoping to broaden the target group for Android phones. As a result, the Xperia X8 might unfortunately also be one of the least desirable Androids, with its middle-of-the-road spec sheet. Still, the device may prove to be a great little unit for its target audience, and it does feature a 600 MHz processor, a 3-inch capacitive, HVGA touchscreen, a 3.2MP camera and Sony Ericsson’s Timescape and Mediascape apps.
Believe it or not, but the X8 runs Android 1.6 Donut – a version of Google’s OS that was released a year ago. To add insult to injury, SE has announced that the Xperia X8 will get Android 2.1 a bit later than its X10 series. Hit play on the video below for an introduction to the X8 by Sony Ericsson.
