Chang Ma, LG’s VP of Marketing, put some serious pressure on his company when he told the Wall Street Journal that the upcoming LG tablet would be “better than the iPad.” When asked about the still-in-development Android tablet, LG President and CEO Dr. Skott Ahn echoed that sentiment but was cautious about when his company would be able to back it up.
LG hosted a digital press conference today for the unveiling of its Optimus One and Optimus Chic line of Android phones. However, one of the questions most on people’s mind was Optimus Pab that LG is developing to rival the iPad. LG has not offered a solid release window beyond Q4 of this year, but the wait is by design.
“We do not want to introduce a large smartphone,” Ahn said during a Q&A session. “We will introduce the best in market tablet that will stand among the best existing products, especially among hardware and software.”
Ahn’s comments reflect the competing demands of companies developing Android tablets. It is important that they deliver a quality product before the iPad continues to build its increasing lead, but competitors cannot rush a substandard product that doesn’t offer a unique experience. Simply up-sizing the Android OS and creating a “large smartphone” is not an optimal tactic.
For its part, LG seems comfortable to build something worthwhile and have it ready for the holiday season. Android will be the OS of choice but they will offer something unique according to Ahn, who had this to say about why LG has opted to embrace Android:
Android will become the dominant [operating system] in mobile. In that regard, process speed and stability must be the main differentiator. LG is committed to becoming the leader in speed and accuracy…We are confident that we will deliver the best product.
