HTC Desire HD officially announced; is this Europe’s EVO?

Android fans in Europe watched folks on the other side of the Atlantic get new devices with awe-inspiring specs and wondered, “What about us?” Sure, the HTC Desire is a great product, but what about the people thirsting for something that could rival the EVO?
The Desire HD fits the bill.
At its press conference today in London, HTC announced that it has taken “the most challenging material of all, metal” and built a solid phone out it. The aluminum-body Desire HD houses a 4.3-inch SLCD display; 8 megapixel camera with dual flash, face recognition, and fun effects; and a 1 GHz processor.
The Desire HD runs Android 2.2 with a version of Sense UI that includes small changes to the interface and feature set, a new website for connectivity, and support for eBooks powered by Kobo. The introduction of DLNA and Dolby Mobile surround sound makes for quite a device.
Expect to see the Desire HD begin shipping to Europe and Asia next month.

why only a pitiful 1250 mAh battery (evo & iphone 4 both pack 1500 mAh), someone please explain the logic…
New snapdragon is 45nm = Less power drain (hopefully)
“the most challenging material of all, metal” Pfft, I can think of much more challenging materials to make a phone out of. Custard, for example.
What clock app is that on the home screen? I see it everywhere but I don't know which app it is… Thanks!
that's the default widget that comes with all Sense phones.
SLCD display? that web site says AMOLED… http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=203871 And I agree with sansenoy, battery capacity is probably fail since the qualcom 8250 use the 1st generation 65nm technology.. 768M RAM Is a winner thought
Nope it's 45nm, its the 8255 2nd generation Snapdragon with the Adreno 205.
Here's proof, scroll down to the 8255. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_(processo…
I’m hoping that since this is basically a GSM version of the EVO that it will come to the US. T-Mobile? Probably not. I may have to switch carriers then.
Probably not, birohazard. T-Mobile is offering the G2 and mytouchHD, so they probably won't offer the HD. It's GSM, but Europe uses different bands for 3G than the U.S. If this comes to North America, I could see it going to Canadians carriers. You could unlock it and try to use AT&T since they share 3G bands with the large Canadian carriers.
I think they'd probably save it for a new device. We may see an EVO-like device come to Verizon or AT&T with the next gen of chip cards, but I doubt they'd upgrade for the Sprint version. The pace that HTC and other companies have taken is mind-blowing but unless they create an EVO 2 or there's a component shortage, they'll probably stick with Snapdragon for the time being.
The Snapdragon currently in it IS the 2nd gen, I think a 3rd gen will appear in maybe 9 months?
I'd quite like to swap right now… my HTC Desire for this one? It looks so much brighter ans slimmer than mine. re Andrewkam. I waited about 2 weeks for my Desire and my source says there still having issues sourcing the phones. So I would imagine there likely to experience the same supply and demand issues unless they managed to sort that out in such a short time? My recent post Samsung Wave e8500 bada
The HTC evo design looks much better than this one. I guess the Evo also has a bigger screen than it. Also the bump around the camera with sharp edges (similar to the HD2) is a bad design as it ends up scratching other articles in the pocket or bag. Does anyone have any first hand usage comments ?
