How to fix UK Android Market download and Gmail log-in errors

British Gmail users have had to use @googlemail.com e-mail addresses because of a legal dispute that Google resolved this year. But when users switch their “[email protected]” to “[email protected],” they experience GTalk log-in errors that prevent them from checking in to chat or download from the Android Market.
Changing the account back to @googlemail fixes the issue temporarily, but that doesn’t solve the root problem. The Google help forums have had several people searching for a fix that didn’t require wiping their phone data and starting over.
Thankfully, Androinica has clever readers who typically discover a workaround for these sorts of things. We received a tip from loyal reader BegottenSun who pointed out that this problem can usually be solved by doing a quick cache clear. Here are the directions sent to us via Begottensun:
Warning: This trick works for almost everyone who uses it but a couple of people have reported problems. Backup your data before attempting it.
- Press the Menu button and navigate to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications
- Select Gmail and then press the “Clear Data” button
- Go back and choose Gmail Storage, and then press Clear Data
- Go back and choose Google Apps, and then press Clear Cache
Go to Gmail, you will be asked to sign in. Sign in using “[email protected]” instead of “[email protected]” and everything will sign in properly! NO Switch back to googlemail required.

This tip is a repost of a previous article we published that was lost in a recent server switch.

this won't work for me :
there's no "Clear Data" button under Google Apps (only clear cache)
Also, Gmail don't ask for signing in when I open it again.
back to googlemail.com
It's due to an App Market update and no matter what you do, it won't fix until they release an update for the previous update. I wiped my phone an started from scratch. it was fine until the app market updated from the old one to the new one.
Go figure.
I get the same problem, HTC desire
Hi, I’m very interested in Linux but Im a Super Newbie and I’m having trouble deciding on the right distribution for me (Havent you heard this a million times?) anyway here is my problem, I need a distribution that can switch between reading and writing in English and Japanese (Japanese Language Support) with out restarting the operating system.
Yikes – I converted to gmal via option on web (via laptop) then followed the instructions above to clear all data. I did get prompted to sign in with my details again but my phone (G2 Touch aka HTC Hero on Tmobile) would accept the new OR old log in (after a panic conversion back to googlemail.com) and now I think I'm staring down the barrel of a factory reset………………AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Is there any hope?
I also have an HTC Hero and the same thing has happened to me. Have you found a solution?
Worked for me…many thanks…

Doesn't work for me,there's no option to clear google apps data, every time i go to gmail after doing the steps it just takes me back to my googlemail without asking me to log back in.
Pete, if you are getting that option then you aren't clearing the data/cache from googlemail.
It is essential to clear the data and cache for all three (some may have only one option – the other may be greyed out). Following the steps correctly will resolve the issue. When first getting into manage application wait for all the icons to appear (i.e. wait for your app list to load, depending on how many you have this can take a while), then press menu button and choose filter option, choose the All option from that (mine is set to download so some of the three options wouldn't appear for me) – it will take you back to the list however it is a full list that includes all the android apps too. Now follow points 1-3 and make sure you get all three – you can also do the talk app too, as that is linked to the market place and your gmail app.
I should have made my problem a bit clearer,I can clear the data from googlemail and gmail storage.
However when I go to google apps there is NO option to clear data it's not greyed out it's just not there at all I also can't clear the cache because it's greyed out and says 0.00b so according to the phone there is no cache to clear.I tried rebooting to see if anything appears under google apps but still nothing. The all option was already checked.
Thanks for your reply though.Guess I'll just have to wait until they fix the issue or factory reset.
Hmm. All that happens on HTC Hero is a page saying "trying to connect to Google Servers" – followed by one saying "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server." Which is a lie, as I can log in via web. Pfui.
This is also my problem. I can no longer login with gmail or googlemail address. Help!
This is my problem too! It's so annoying as today i went into the t-mobile shop today and they said they'd fixed it for me but it does exactly the same thing. I'm back to square one, HELP ME!
OK on my hero now I cant log into anything, it jus says couldnt establish a connection even though my wifi works and my 3g internet…this has ruined my hero. you might aswel take it off or put a warning.
My recent post StevenChap: RT @androinica How to fix UK Android Market download and Gmail log-in errors http://bit.ly/bXfwWQ
Thanks a lot for this, everything is working OK for me now. It's annoying that Google couldn't have told us about this themselves.
Mine (HTC Legend) won't allow me as far as the menu showing applications. As the menu is loading I receive a message saying "Sorry! The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." I've tried again a few times.
Any offers?
Thanks loads! This worked for me on both a Dell Streak and a HTC Hero!
This didn't work for my Desire. I followed the instructions exactly – although it said Data 0 straightaway, I didn't have the option to enter a new gmail address and the data that I deleted was still there when I looked again as was my googlemail address. Changed back to googlemail and all fine.
I guess it's just not this easy to update all phones/accounts this way otherwise surely Google would have said so.
I'm no expert, but FWIW: I couldn't access app market (stuck at "starting download…"), gmail, other mail. Browser worked fine. I did a factory reset. Reinstalled everything except app killers. Works fine now w/ gmail account. I think it was likely from killing GTalk, which is now untouched.
this worked for me, thanks a lot
Updated my G2 to 2.1 and couldn't access market. Simply did a factory reset and used an existing gmail and it works fine.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!! LG Optimus GT540 was unable to download anything until I switched to gmail.com. Had to do it on pc via google email settings pages but now works fine.
Thank you very much, mine got fixed!!
i Restored my device to reset factory and then I entered @gmail.com and it worked…
hope it helps….
I have a Samsung Galaxy S
In Applications->Manage Applications, there is no Gmail or Google applications option.
I tink you'll have to press "Menu", and filter "Running" apps for this to show up. Hope it works and helps innit.
That doesn’t work too..
I fixed it by going to Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset and you'll be asked if you're sure about your choice so just click ahead. After that you will see that screen that gives you a couple of options from Reboot phone and reset data. I chose the last one, which says something about reset cache. Now I'm all good, I can download using WiFi or 3G.
I hope it works for all. Sorry I don't have any proper screenshot for it.
Thankyou.
I knew something was wrong because it was giving me some sort of error to do with google sync. Said sync was unavailable or something. When I did the above it seemed to have forced it to sync when logging on to Gmail. all apps downloaded instantly after that, even ones I had cancelled!
This mentions nothing about fixing the market issue! LAME post!
I managed to solve the Market problem as follows:
Open Menu / settings / applications
Click on view all tab ( froyo 2.2)
Click on Market and Clear cache.
I was then able to download again.
Hope it works for you.
Sorry forgot to add the manage applications. See below.

Sorry. Forgot the downloadmanager cache or data as well.
yayy worked for mee! fnx
might be completely unrelated, but if you're on wifi rather than 3g and are behind a firewall / router; make sure port 5228 is open. i could not download apps from the market, but had never been able to as is first android phone i've owned. opening port 5228 on my router got it all going, and no need to clear cache or data on my phone
ahhh thankyou .!
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! This worked for my HTC My Touch. I'm soo greatful! It's been weeks without my favorite apps!
ive tried all if this and still no luck, can anyone help?
I was at my witts end with this. I worked out that the problem was with android market itself as i could still send and receive email through googlemail.
The simplist solution is to log on to googlemail on your pc and change your password. Make sure that market is not still running in the background on your phone (i used advanced task killer to kill this app) and then open market again.
Android will recognise that your password has changed and propt you to enter the new password. Thus re-authenticationg your account and volla!
Googlemail on your phone will have automatically updated to your changed password as both accounts are linked.
Hope this helps some of you
Cheers, worked a treat.
Now downloading everything
i fuckin luv u all u made my day
i just uninstalled the update in market app n cleared the data n it started to work xD
I solved this same problem by opening ports 5228 UDP and TCP on my wifi's proxy, or trying in a different wifi network.
That was it!
i fixed it on my phone by logging into googlemail on my pc and changing the email address to be @gmail and this fixed the issue.
just remember to enter the full email address with @gmail.com when logging in on your phone.
