Some exciting new developments in regards to Android 2.2 Froyo have come available this monring, according to TechCrunch, Google has added support for USB tethering as well as mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. And along with the news, they have posted the appropriate screen captures as some evidence. This sounds good, certainly both will be welcomed features, however the catch — this could be something the carriers turn off or possibly begin charging for.

Carriers such as Vodafone in Ireland are already charging for tethering as you get assigned a higher bandwidth channel when the carrier detects it. They provide you with specific settings and you set up the phone as a dial up connection on your PC (obviously not dial-up speeds). I think a way around this is using something likehttp://code.google.com/p/azilink/ in combination with an Open VPN, have this working (as I couldn't get the dial up method working on a Mac) but I'm yet to verify if the network has detected the tethering.

Just another reason why the nexus one is awesome, it’s not a branded phone so t mobile can’t turn things off. Maybe this is what google meant by revolutionary distribution. Less power for the evil phone companies who love to charge more (or twice) for a single service.
I don’t know but more and more I am starting to think froyo 2.2 was developed specificly for the nexus one, or was the main focus. No problem for me since I’m a N1 owner, but does anyone else think this is is the case?
It would most likely be available for all the next gen smart phones coming out next year. rooted users will also find a way to port this over to their devices. As for us android users who bought our devices manufactured in 08-09, not to worry, im sure there will be froyo themed home replacement apps being drawn out as we speak.
