Vonage releases Android app for AT&T and T-Mobile USA; Sprint/Verizon may follow

VoIP provider Vonage now offers a mobile solution for its unlimited calling to more than 60 countries. This follows several requests from customers who have already used Vonage to replace their home phone service and calling cards to make international calls.
The Vonage Mobile Android app is available in the Android Market, but only to AT&T and T-Mobile customers. While Verizon may have a stranglehold on Skype, AT&T and T-Mobile customers will get the first crack at Vonage for Android. I asked a Vonage rep why Sprint or Verizon customers aren’t also able to use the service and received this reply.
“We cannot specifically address a timeline for adding these additional platforms but we will continue to expand our offerings in 2010 to include a robust set of voice and messaging services that utilize Wi-Fi and 3G wireless networks. We chose to focus on the GSM portion of the Android market first because GSM is the most popular standard for mobile telephone systems in the world.”

- $24.99 unlimited calling to 60 countries or Pay-Per-Use
- Outbound call can be used on 3G or Wi-Fi. Calls routed through Wi-Fi will not use any of your plan’s monthly minutes
- App imports existing contact list and will display existing cell phone number for outgoing calls**

Can I use this service to make WiFi calls from foreign countries back to the USA?
yes. you can make free calls to the us from any wifi connection in the world. no need for any user of a blackberry, iphone, ipod touch, or android gsm phone to ever pay anything to call any phone number in the US from abroad provided they have access to a wifi connection. pretty cool and a big thank you to Vonage for that.
Make it work for NON Apple i phone customers, you are losing android customers over this starting with me and they pay the same monthly rate.
