Twitter’s official Android app is now live. We knew this was coming for a few weeks now, and it’s now here…for people with Android 2.1 only.
Sadly, the official Twitter client runs 2.1, making it available only to about 1 in 4 Android users. The rest of you suckers will have to find something else if you have a Hero, G1, Cliq, Cliq XT, Backflip…you know what, it will be easier to name the phones that can use this app: Desire, Droid, Incredible, Nexus One, and some Milestones.
The app looks very simple and no-frills, as one could expect when Twitter is involved in the design process. According to the official Twitter blog post announcing the client, Google participated in the app’s creation and more will be coming shortly.
Thanks to everybody for sending this over!

I have a Droid on 2.0.1 firmware and it's running the Twitter app without a problem. I'm rooted and running DroidMod 1.0, which does not allow "2.1 Only" apps, like Google Earth, without further modifications.
The Twitter announcement specifically says 2.1 is required. Perhaps your custom ROM contains certain elements that make this app compatible. Either way, congrats on being able to see it before others.
Oddity: when you tweet from the app, is shows as "via web". I suppose that'll be changed in an update soon enough. If nothing else, it's just another way to advertise the Android app.
It's a nice and full of features, but I still prefer Touiteur!
And by the way, on the AppBrain page of Twitter for Android it says: "For Android version 2.0 and higher" http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.twitter.android
diggin it! not overdoing it with bells and whistles, just what I want and no more, no less. My recent post Buzz by UESNYC (B. Polito) from Google chat status
