My phone won’t download apps from the Android Market! My phone gets stuck downloading apps from the Android Market!
You’ve probably experienced this problem at some point and become desperate to discover a fix for the issue. When this started happening to me a few weeks ago, I did some prodding around the Google Help Forums and I found the source of the problem: Google Talk.
There seems to be a link between GTalk and the Market that prevents some downloads from taking place. When a user is not logged in to GTalk, he or she may experience some issues with downloading apps from the Android Market. The solution is thus to log-in to GTalk and hope that the download progress bar will finally start moving. A Google employee reports that this is a “temporary connectivity issue” but it happens to me on a regular basis and annoyed the heck out of me for weeks.
Here’s how to fix it.
Launch the Google Talk application. If you are already logged in, press Menu > More > Sign out.
Relaunch Google Talk and then return to the Android Market.
In the Market, cancel and then restart download. If all goes according to plan, you should see it work on the second attempt. If not, your problems may run deeper and you should contact your carrier or the Google Help Forums.

Chat and market use the same service to tie into your google account. Since you can't sign in from market, you have to use chat.
Here an somewhat related question…I have a CLIQ and for the life of me cannot update Google Maps. Every time I search "maps" or "google maps" in the market, it will give me a billion other map apps, but not the official google maps app. My wife's G1 gets navigation and all this stuff with her Google Mpas, and I'm still stuck with an old version. ANY help would be awesome!
enable third party app installs form your global settings, then hit a direct link to the apk from your browser.
Right on, I'll try that momentarily. Thanks!
Any idea as to where to find a direct link to Google Maps 4.0?
The reason your wife's G1 has navigation and your Cliq doesn't is because the Cliq hasn't been upgraded from 1.5 yet and Google Maps with the navigation is not available from 1.5. Once Motorola updates Android on your phone, then you can install and use the new Google Maps.
I have the same problem, plus I cannot download any applications! I have a Motorola Cliq XT and I've tried turning off the phone then restarting it , which didnt help. I can't seem to find whats wrong with my phone!!
Sorry about the horrid grammar…;P
If that doesn't work, use the barcode scanner to have the app come up http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.google.androi…
If that doesn't work, use the barcode scanner to have the app come up http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.google.androi…
Just tried the scanner and it said there are no matches in Market. Is this a CLIQ thing? I've NEVER been able to get any updates for Maps on this phone!
that's because the cliq with MotoBlur is based off of android 1.5, all the map updates, Navigation etc, require 1.6. People using the HTC Hero, Samsung Moment, Droid Eris, Samsung Behold II, are all in the same boat.
wow… its connect to more than that I think… just 'signed out' and restarted the app and finally my calendar sync'd
Same thing with my maisl, which kept on NO synchroinising. I did the trick proposed here, and three seconds later, WOW, they keep coming in (at least, so far).
Before, I used to auto kill GTalk as it was way too much RAM consuming for my branded HTC Magic (G2).
Even if it states "market downloads", the trick seems to work just fine with any sync' related issues.
GREAT WORK! Thanks so much !
Cheers from France !
If you cannot connect to google talk (for Dutch people for example), turn your WiFi on and connect to any wireless network. Then your downloads will start. After that, downloads on 3G will also work again.
ULTRA THANX from Greece
sorry man the cliq is running android 1.5 (cupcake) …the maps with navigation will only work on 1.6 (donut) and up but the cliq will be upgraded to 2.1 (eclair) in about a month or less
this is great.
thanks it worked
i got the same problem it just won’t install anything rebooted and still doesn’t work iv reset the phone but doesn’t work iv been having problem with my G1 ever since i got it on launch in the UK 1st the keyboard slide up bit broke and the wireless stopped working then the keyboard stops working and now i can even install apps. i won’t get it fixed t-mobile are asking for £100 to fix it
i just tryed it and it and it wont sign in to google talk, saying (could not connect to server. will retry shortly). but never works ****ing G1 i know what im not going to get when my contract ends. thru m8s have the same problem
I am facing same problem.
To extend it i m unable to open gtalk on my mobile.
Now that i cant even open gtalk i cant log out or log in and so cant use market any suggestions?
this occurred (for me) because I changed from googlemail to gmail. after reverting back to googlemail, these problems went away
Thanks for that Chris, worked for me also. You would think that Google had this sort of thing covered as they are pushing for people to change to gmail in the UK .
Yes, as soon as I reverted to googlemail, the apps came powering in.

FINALLY!!! After a week of getting frustrated with not being able to update/download apps from the Market, it turns out to be something as simple as the recent change to my email address i.e. googlemail.com to gmail.com! My phone (G1) has just gone in to update overload within seconds of reverting back to googlemail.com! Google has now put up a message on their FAQ site confirming the issues regarding email changes in the UK.
It correct that Gtalk and Android market are related somehow, But it does not work for me. I’m signed in into Gtalk and Gmail, but unable to connect to market still.
Help please..
I wish this fixed the problems. On my second android device now, multiple gmail accounts, nada.
Shelfing the androids for now, they’re just not ready for prime time. I’ll give it a couple more years but currently the shipping alone returning these things is costing me more than the devices themselves.
i MEANT LOOKED FOR THE APP
I have had this problem for 3 weeks since I purchased an app on the market place. From the looks of the forms hundreds of people are having this problem and the resetting of GTALK does not work for all. Google has no way of reporting problems. I wish I could back to APPLE had the iPhone for 2 years and any problem was solved by apple support.
i have a dell streak phone, and i have updated it to 2.1 and all of a sudden it wont download anything from the market. Ive tried the google chat thing and ive tried resetting it. someone please help?
I'd been having problems for days with being unable to download anything on my Cliq. Went to GT & it wouldn't sign me out so I went & removed my Gmail account from 'Accounts' & everything starts to download. YAY!! Thanks
this is so stupid! does anybody have a solution, my htc is so close to being smashed, all week ive had this problem ive tried everythin, please somebody help me
:@
I'm on a brandnew Galaxy S. I tried to access Android Market via WiFi. Can't download application because GTalk is not able to sign in. I have Google App, not Gmail so changing addresses doesnt' work. Nor can I delete the account!
It's appalling to conclude there is simply no Google support on this. They don't follow or at least don't reply to the hundreds of messages on this topic. NO knowledgebase article with clear info
It's a f… smartphone. Why doesn't
Just started GTalk and all my pending downloads started and completed fine on my HTC Dream with Android 1.5. Thanks.
Hey
Change your gmail pswd. Once you've done so, instead of updating your pswd in the email app, go to the android market first, it should prompt you for the new pswd. This should authenticate your phone again and your market and google talk should working. (I found that the issue has to do with Google security protocol and the that fact that it invalidates your acct info.)
nice one Anjel.. android market did ask to authenticate.. but still stuck with “Starting download…”
I’ve seen quite a lot of “solutions” and none of them work.
OH I KNOW.. I HAVE THE SOLUTION!!
1. Pull down pants
2. Bend over
3. stick phone in ass
I’m amazed at how many experts there are who have no clue. And Google can go and get ****** !!!
instead if signing into google talk, try activating a wifi connection. it works. yay! lucky to have a super smart fiance.
Google Talk is a PC application, it will not do anything on a Android phone, it will not even start to download
I have heard a lot on various Android forums about Google talk to resolve the problem with apps loading. However, I believe the main problem in most cases is due to the phone memory having filled up with apps, email and other files. This happened to me on my brand new HTC Desire, which is very similar to the Nexus One, after using it for 4 days! For some reason all apps load by default onto the phones internal memory, not on the sdhc transflash memory card. To rectify the problem I recommend the following:
1. Go to Android market, open the tap "Downloads", stop all pending downloads
2. Go to Settings, SD&phone storage, check the "Available space". if it is less than 25 MB I recommend you create more space as follows:
3. Go to "Settings", "Applications", "Manage applications", a list of your appplications opens. tap on an application and a new screen opens. It gives you various options: "Force stop", , "Uninstall", "Clear Data", "Move to SD card", "Clear cache", "Clear defaults"
4. If you don't need an app, uninstall it. This will remove the app permanently from your phone
5. Some, but not all apps, can be moved to the memory card. I suggest you do this for all apps where it is possible to preserve internal phone memory for email and other necessities.
6. Check and adjust your email settings, this also takes up internal memory space
WTF is going on with this Android market. I have read all the so called fixes from everyone and none of them work. I have even reset my phone to factory status and created a brand new google account.
I was downloading ok last week now nothing. This is BS.
Where the hell are the Google Tech’s on this. This is not new its been going on for a nearly a couple of years as far as I can tell. PISSED OFF I can tell ya, went out my way to get onto the android OS.
This fix worked for me. Thanks!!
You saved my day!
aargh still no apps! i have tried everything on here, it wont even download apps when i connect it to my laptop via USB, iv had the phone 3 days now and its my first contract phone, not impressed
any other ideas
iv also set it up so when its connected the the laptop it debugs (havnt a clue what that means) but it said it helps with downloading apps … IT HASNT
helpp before i throw it in a temper lol
THIS IS NOT A "FIX". A fix solves the problem. This is a WORK-AROUND! Get off your asses Google! WTF!
It Works. Thank you so much
Just tried this on my G1, worked flawlessly – UDAMAN
sick
I discovered one possible cause of this today, especially if you've changed your phone recently. If you have two Android phones running off the same Google account there will be a clash until the old phone is disabled from connecting to any Google services which seems to stall the Market from downloading apps.
Maybe talking nonsense but it's what appears to have happened with mine after clearing the data caches didn't work.
I've been trying to update and download apps for about a months now, I've tried the steps that you pointed out yet it's still a no go. I have a HTC G1 phone..I hope they didn't fully abandon it's users..
My Phone was full. I removed some old apps and I can once more download apps. rkleiber was spot-on! Thanks!
BTW, HTC Wildfire running 2.1.
My recent post Ireland
Changed from googlemail to gmail and apps started flooding in 10 minutes later
Im trying to download a game called pocket legends on the motorola droid. It goes to 100% but then it has an empty download bar and it wont finish downloading.
Hey everybody, try Uninstalling Updates for the Market app under “Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Market” This set the Market back to it’s factory version and then re-updated it. I can now install apps.
Having the same symptoms, was getting a security authentication box with an impossible to read on a small screen string of letters. Tried entering the letters and it always failed. Tried logging into mail.google.com and got an error stating the account had been disabled. Waiting for Google to reply as to why the account is disabled.
Other failed attempts:
1. Logging out of google talk. Can't, get an error saying invalid user/pass which kicks me out of the application, no way to change the user pass.
2. Tried adding a valid gmail account, no joy only uses the default account.
3. tried removing the default account and got warning stating the phone would be reset to factory defaults. Not ready to go nuclear on it yet.
All I can say is I have never had a problem remotely like this on my iPhone.
hey guys have sony xperia x10 installed android 2.1 last night and now can not download anything any ideas
I am having the same problem jimgixxer
This worked for me! I was getting desperate because FB, new Panda Home 2, and some other Apps I’d grown more than accustomed to wouldn’t finishing downloading/installing. Now all is good! Thanks for the tip!
tried everything written above
1 stopping market downloads and cleaning cache
2 logging out of google talk and killing the process then logging in
no joy
3 force close of gtalk and market and clearing cache
no joy
4 unistalling the update to market app
still no joy
5 my gmail account is not uk so thats not issue
anybody any other suggestions ?
btw Android OS 2.1 phone samsung galaxy
..Update the only thing that worked for me was to reset the phone.
applications — settings — privacy — factory data reset
BE WARNED IT REMOVES ALL FILES ETC DOWNLOADED TO PHONE, so this is a sucky method
but the only thing that worked for me
Thanks to all those who have contributed with their ideas.
I had a G1 that was being a big pain. It wouldn't let me text out or call out half the time, text messages came in spurts, and it stopped updating and allowing me to download from the market. This is my 6th G1 and will be my last. Period.
What finally worked for me was the uninstall the market updates!
I had previously made a new password for my gmail, deleted the downloads in the market, deleted apps I no longer used and media I no longer wanted that was on the internal memory, and non of those worked on their own, but very well may have made a difference in the end.
Thanks again!
Android Market now downloads.
I set up my Motorola defy with an existing Google account. This causes the problems with Market. You have to restore to factory settings and create a whole new Google account with gmail. Thing then work. What a hassle. Good luck everyone.

Thanks that worked for my i1 nextel….
I found a different way of fixing my problem. i changed my Desire's theme back to what it originally was, and downloads worked again.
BUT my phone doesn't have google talk ,so I can't download it because ANDROID MARKET WON'T LET ME DOWNLOAD APPS.eh?
Love the Samsung Galaxy Vibrant S, hate Samsung Kies. I am also stuck on downloading from Market and can't find google talk on my device. Samsung website is useless and support isn't much better. I also wish I would have got the iphone!

Thanks!! pall… i'v almost give up with this problem.. try to clear data for Checking service, download manager, market, GTalk service.. but i forgot to sign in and sign out Gtalk again (since i used Whatsapp more frequent).. Really appreciate it
Oh my gosh! this helped soooo much! I've been looking for a fix to my Motorola i1 and couldn't find anything simple. Thank you so much!
hello! i've read all your comments but nothing works for me
what should i do? i have SE xperia x10 mini and it worked just fine when i had 1.6 software. now that i have 2.1 it doesn't work. i am signed in gmail and gtalk, network works, i'v restarted the phone for about 10 times, but still doesn't wont to download any app from android market. please please help me!
Thank you very much!
I was experiencing the same issure with my Motorola i1 since I had got it back from being repaired by Motorola and had to do a hard reset. But signing in and out of my GTalk fixed the problem. Think it's a bit weird that GTalk would have any interferance with the android Market, but none the less Im glad its working again.
thank you!
i actually tried that but maybe i have to do it more often. i'll try, thanks!
Here's what I did.
Go to:
Settings | Applications | Manage Applications
Click on:
Market
Click:
- Clear Cache
- Clear Data
- [As a last Resort] Uninstall Update
Works perfect now
If you want to reinstall the more recent Market APK you can Barcode/QR Scan it to your phone from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=…
Try this for Android 2.2
(i) go online using a PC to create a new GMail account
(ii) turn on Android fone, use a USB wire to back up all SD Card and SIM Card data onto your PC first (for safety)
(ii) then Clear Market cache (Settings > Applications > Market > Clear cache) as well as Uninstall all Market updates
(iii)do a complete system reset back to factory settings (Settings / Privacy / Factory data reset)
(iv) go thru the manufacturer's initial fone set-up procedure, register and sync using the GMail account you've just created
Should work.
However, all your local Telco's internet settings would be gone. This means no
internet-access. You then gotta fone your local Telco after you and ask them to take you thru the configuration needed under Settings > Wireless & Network > VPN settings
and Access Point Names settings.
Google – pls pull your socks up. This SUCKS BIG TIME. A VERY NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE!!
Where do the apps downloaded on my htc g1 go? It says that the download is completed, but i cant see any of those installed on my phone.
I've tried ALL the suggestions about fixing this problem with my Samsung Galaxy Apollo !
There is only ONE way to remedy this ; Perorm a factory reset
this will cure the fault !!!!
where would i find gtalk on the gt540?
It amazes me that this is still a problem a year and a half later. I just found this on a google search and is the fix for my non-downloading updates. Silly.
same with my problem, i cant download any application, but my wifi is on pls help me
the tip worked for me. thanks Andrew!
had an app stuck on “waiting to install. ” this worked perfectly. thanks!!
