If you assume that the level of a response roughly equates to the level of a threat, the folks at Apple Inc. must feel pretty threatened. In an article released today in the New York Times, Apple confirms that it has filed lawsuits against HTC for 20 patent infringements relating to the iPhone. HTC, of course, is the maker of many Android-based phones, including the first Android phone, the G1, and the most advanced Android phone, the Nexus One.
According to the NY Times article, Steve Jobs had the following to say:
“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”
Wow. Gizmodo actually has the lawsuit documents, which show that Apple is claiming (among other things) infringement on “touch screens, power conservation and the orientation of graphics on a mobile phone.”
Apple is apparently asking the courts to block HTC from “making, using, selling and/or offering phones” with these supposedly patented capabilities in the US.
Hmmm. If Apple is going down this road, they have a whole lot of other manufacturers to go after, and not just Android models. The Palm Pre leaps immediately to mind. Of course, maybe Apple doesn’t see Palm as a threat–which is why HTC will be first to get a court date.

HTC should buy Palm and then counter sue Apple based on their infringements against Palm patents. http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/28/apple-vs-palm-…
What goes around… didn’t apple steal Xerox’s innovations back in the 80s.. surely Jobs understands the fundamentals of karma..
karma does not exist. This is just a matter of eventuality. Proof that karma does not exist: Someone does something bad to you, you decide to not to sit back and take it, you get revenge. That is revenge. If instead, you choose not to take revenge, eventually the person who messed with you is going to mess with someone who will not take it and they get revenge. It is not karma; karma doesn't exist. It is eventuality. Now, I am not on Apple's side about this, I just can't stand people who still believe in fairy tales like the ridiculous concept of "karma." Do you also still believe in the Tooth Fairy, and Santa Claus? How about the Easter Bunny? I'll bet you do.
Wow apple must really feel threatened. They are reaching for anything. I love my nexus 1.
What a dick move, Apple…
Apple looks scared!!!!
Apple can't sue everybody. Eventually they'll run out of lawyer or money or both.
Old Steevy boy wanted to sue my silly ass just because I have a robot vagina. He knows damn well it was my idea. Who has the sizzle chest now Steven? That’s what I thought.
Well infringement s then ,be ready to pay for it.
Looks like apple is scared… If they want to corner the market on smartphones they need to release theirs to all carriers.. AT & T is the BIGGEST reason I dont have an iphone… i will stick with Cellular South… Yes it is a regional carrier but the service and customer service is oustanding and having unlimited everything for 79.99 is wonderful and my second one for my daughter is 39.99 for unlimited everything… I know I sound like a commercial but thats how I feel… At&t and apple can go sc*** themselves…lol…..
Not just that but release an iPhone where the USER gets to replace and "switch-out" their batteries when they get low on power, LIKE EVERY OTHER CELL PHONE MODEL OUT THERE.
