Rumor: Android 2.1 update coming to all U.S. Android phones

According to Android and Me and their “sources familiar with the matter”, all U.S. Android smartphones will be receiving the latest Android 2.1 update (that includes the T-Mobile G1). They also say that many of the devices moving from 1.6 to 2.1 will require a wipe and will have to be done over tethering to a computer; OTA may not be most secure way of doing it.
This update will include most of the features of Android 2.1 like the News and Weather widget, speech-to-text in any field, 5 home screens, etc. I highly doubt that every Android phone will get the live wallpapers, especially the G1.
This update may solve some of the Android severing issues and developer woes. Instead of having to cater to 2 to 3 versions of Android, developers can concentrate on developing for one version of the OS, at least in the U.S. One thing that this doesn’t solve and may be the next problem is the differences in the capabilities and performance of the devices with Android. Even though all U.S. Android phones will have the same OS, all devices won’t be able to handle the same applications such as 3D gaming and other processor heavy applications so we will still see some sort of segragation of apps.
Regardless, it’s nice to see that older Androids may get some new flavor and join the 20% of 2.x OS versions. We will keep a look out for anything official from Google or any of the carriers.

I just wish that fact baseded only reports would roll out from htc and verizon about our phones this everyday looking to see if they had put out a news release is getting old. I have had this phone sence 12/6/09 and the salesman said it was going to be updated to 1.6 in a week. I never even got that update! Sorry just venting off steam.
I totally understand. It is annoying to not know when you are going to get your update or if it will even happen. I think that the companies that produce Android devices as well as the carriers need to move faster when it comes updates.
lol damn fellas i mean i dont think i have ever dealt with a company that put out updates as often as Google. Warranted i was impatient too but most OS's from company come out annually if that.
Every day if im on this eris phone more than 5 min. on a call the phone will let me hangup and then locks up. No buttons or anything will work. I have to pull the battery. The bad thing is this never happened before the update on 1/11/10 but two days later it started. I thought that update was to fix that problem but insted caused mine. I hope htc and verizon see’s this forum. Verizon told me to do a reset on my phone. I did and it didnt help. I didnt see how that would of helped anyway. All i got was some work on getting info back on my phone. Come on with the update my back cover is getting loose from removing it so many times. Tnx for looking.
If or when the Eris gets updated to 2.1 will the problem with the bluetooth handsfree be fixed. Right now i can just call the last # i called or who called me last from hands free. Otherwise i have to get my phone out and push the # that i need to call. Any info would be welcomed tnx.
Hey I’m from the UK and when I read this post it made me think, and they wonder why sales are down in Europe! (I have the HTC Hero so I will be getting the update anyway). But that is not the point we are left in the dark with so many features! E.g. Google Voice, Google Navigation, speech to text, AND NOW THIS! Surely Google could put on their glasses to be able to see past just the US market.
Google should plan to create a desktop application to manage the phone. I believe they can do that well. They should use the same team behind picassa to build this application. And ask all the google experience phones to work with this software. and of course it should be made available for linux, mac and windows. I think that would do what itunes does for the iphone.
Also the worst thing about devices with android 1.5 is that they can't send files over bluetooth. I am happy about that decision. It brought down the price of many devices in the Indian market. No one would buy a phone which doesn't have those basic features out of the box.
American customers need to learn that from Indians.
samsung galaxy and spica is available in India for less than Rs.15,000/-(325$)
Previously it used to cost Rs.29,000/- (629$) almost double!!!
