Nexus One Having 3G Problems
January 11, 2010 | by Marin Perez

It looks like Nexus One owners are having some issues with their 3G data connection, according to the T-Mobile support forums. Many users are complaining about the lack of 3G coverage, or that the connection will randomly fluctuate between EDGE and 3G. One commenter wrote, “The performance is highly variable: anywhere between 0-4 bars of 3G and 4 bars of EDGE on the second floor of my house vs the first floor where it’s 0 bars of 3G down to 3-4 bars of EDGE. Regardless of the 3G reception indicated by the bars, I rarely see speeds in excess of 600K downstream and maybe 475k upstream on UMTS.”
The carrier and Google said they are investigating the problem, and the companies are seeking user feedback to see if there are any commonalities with those experiencing issues. T-Mobile USA’s 3G data coverage has lagged behind the other carriers, but they’ve been touting the reach of their mobile broadband network lately. While the forum-goers represent a small percentage of N1 owners, it does show T-Mobile USA still has plenty of room for improvement.
I have an N1 in the house and decided to do a 3G speed test against the Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless. Using the Xtremelabs Speedtest app, the N1 averaged 298.8 kbps downlink and 46.4 kbps upstream while the Droid had solid averages of 511.2 kbps down and 219.4 kbps up. I’m sure T-Mobile USA will be able to iron out whatever bugs are causing these issues, but I can’t wait to get my hands on the N1 for Verizon.
What have your experiences with the N1’s data connection been?

I noticed that just picking up the phone will often make it switch to Edge. see also http://droidstory.com/2010/01/10/nexus-one-3g-pro...

I haven't had any issues with my unlocked N1 in the SF bay area. It switches between Edge and 3G periodically, but whenever it's dropped to Edge it typically switches back to 3G in seconds, so I rarely notice a lag. 800kbps down is fine by me.
I've noticed it does fluctuate between EDGE and 3G in my house, but the overall data experience has been pretty zippy.
I'm consistently around 900kbps, even higher sometimes, in the Sacramento area so no complaints whatsoever from me so far!
I have yet to get g3 on my nexus one . All i get is edge in Tampa , Florida
How is it just on EDGE? I'm sure Wi-Fi helps a lot, but are you upset at the lack of 3G? I remember I had an edge-only curve a few years ago and it wasn't that bad.
I live in South Florida, I don't get 3g at my house, but it literally switches on when I leave the block, from periodically it will lose 3g but come right back on…guess it varies
