First, let me just say that I wish I could control the human language as well as some of these companies. The fact that “coming weeks” was reported just a matter of days ago, and now we’ve got word that the update is starting to roll out to devices today, makes me think Verizon just likes to surprise its customers. Gotta keep you on your toes and what not, right?
At this point, I’m sure you’re just waiting to hear in more detail what the fix is meant to do. How’s the edge of that seat? Okay, okay, here you go:
- OS stability is improved
- Battery life is improved
- Camera auto focus functionality is improved, and time between shots is reduced
- Enhancements for three-way calling
- Audio for incoming calls improved
- When receiving a call on call waiting, the speakerphone now remains on
- Bluetooth functionality is improved; background echo is eliminated
- Improved Bluetooth phone book transfer of contacts to in-vehicle Bluetooth solutions
- After closing a GPS application, the GPS icon will now automatically be removed from the notification panel
- Users can now receive SMS and MMS messages after an EMS message is received
- SMS and MMS may now be sent to seven-digit addresses
- Google contact merging has been updated to accommodate seven-digit numbers
- Visual Voice Mail notices now arrive instantaneously
- The corporate calendar widgets user interface is updated
Simply put, there’s a whole bunch of improvements. Now most importantly, as opposed to the T-Mobile’s CLIQ that got updated last week, it looks like Verizon is going ahead and pushing out a notification pop-up to DROID devices out there about the update. That should make the updating procedure a lot easier, but if not, follow the link right below for some step-by-step instructions.
All you DROID users out there, let us know how the update works for you. How long did it take to download? Can you tell the obvious differences? Are you happy with the update?

Anyone have new news updates for any of the older devices?

Haven't gotten the pop up yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Must be a slow roll out.
December 8th, 2009 at 1:03 am
I actually haven't even received mine, nor has a friend of mine who -works- for Verizon. Slow and steady, as that old saying goes. I guess.

Also have not seen the update yet. Checking for System Updates doesn't prompt it either, unfortunately.

Zhu zhu pets are at the top of my daughter’s Christmas list and I got lucky to find some at retail price. I used http://www.amzpricesniper to do it. It works pretty well. 2 pets for under $20 bucks!

The whole thing took less than 5 mins. The popup was there when I got up this morning. My Droid is faster but locks up sometimes when I am typing a text. Not too many visible changes other than the slide path to unlock the lock screen is straight across not arced like it was. Haven't used bluetooth since the upgrade.
December 9th, 2009 at 8:20 am
When I saw images of the new lock screen, I didn't think I'd like it much. But after playing with it for a few minutes, I really do like it. Shows a bit more in advancement, in my eyes. I haven't had the device lock up on me yet, thankfully, and I'm sorry you're having that situation. Does it happen only when you are trying to text message someone?
If it keeps happening, perhaps you should try pulling the battery from the phone while it is still turned on. This is a hard reset, and it usually helps.

Just side loaded the update for 2.01 on my Droid. Few simple step by step instructions to follow. It works great, I have the new lock screen and an overall UI speed boost. check it out:

I literally updated this in my sleep last night. I vaguely remember hearing a noise and a popup saying something about upgrading. Now I got into work and see a new interface! Cool! I'm a heavy sleeper.
A handful of my concerns are fixed. The UI is definitely more responsive! This was my biggest concern, as the Droid was choppy and slow before (you'd only notice it if you were used to the iPhone/iPod touch).
Another is the unlock swipe. For some reason, the rotary one really got to me. There's no need to waste my time going UP and over, when I can just go over! Good fix.
The power widget being black is nice. Mainly, I'm thrilled about the responsiveness. Very nice. It was also great how easy it was to update, must have been a button or two, pushed automatically. Very user-friendly. Thanks Motorola & Verizon!

Considering you're experience, Verizon could probably start rolling out commercials about how easy it is to upgrade the DROID, too. "So easy, you can do it in your sleep!" kind of thing.
It's good to hear that you are liking the experience even more. As I've said before, I didn't think I was going to be a fan of the new unlock screen, but I really am. It's nice and simple, and different from the rest of the unlock screens out there. Not that it wasn't before, I just don't need to be reminded of an old rotary phone every time I unlock my DROID.

Anyone experiencing problems with facebook contact syncing? I've got triplicate facebook profiles for people and can't figure out how to remove them.
December 10th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Delete your facebook account from the Contacts list, then add it again.
I've found it's easier to not sync facebook at all, but that's because most of the people I'd really want to contact using anything other than facebook itself are on my google list. Hundreds of facebook contacts got to be a bit much.

It's my wife's and she likes that it grabs the picture, and any phone/email changes. I agree with you that grabbing all of them is way to much.
I've added to an enhancement ticket to allow for selective linking of facebook accounts. If there is a feature you really want go check out http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list
star the tickets you agree with and add any that aren't already mentioned.

Is it just me, or is orientation switching a lot more stable and responsive with this update? With 2.0, I had gotten into the habit of flicking the phone forward and tilting it back to get it to recognize the change in orientation from portrait to landscape and vice-versa; after applying the update, I haven't had to do that at all. Nothing about that is listed in the updated features, though…

Hi, i have one issue that's bothering me. I did notice a faster UI which is great, but now my GOOGLE gagdet/widget search box is NOT alligned with the screen at the top, it sits about 1/5 of an inch below the top notification bar and it's 1/5 of an inch squished in on the left and right sides of the screen.
Anyone else encounter this issue? Anyone hear of this happening before to anyone else? I installed a couple games around the same time I installed the 2.0.1 update, but only noticed this issue after the update restarted the Droid.
The games I installed around the same time as the update are:
ProjectINF and Slimeball Speedway.
I'm not a big user of the bar, but I like it being there, it's just that not aligning as it should bothers me something fierce and I had to send it to the trash bin just to ease my nerves.
Any Input Is Appreciated!
Thx
Jon

oh, and since the update, I cannot connect to ProjectINF and Slimeball Speedway has become a bit choppy when the ball gets pretty large and is moving fast. These issues were NOT happening at all before the update. Going to try my emulators and other games now, hoping there's no problems there because then work is going to suck tonight!!!

Since the update several of my apps were deleted. They are shown in my "downloads" but I am unable to reinstall them – even paid ones won't install….it says "preparing to install" but stays that way for hours and hours. Tried restarting my phone several times and taking the battery out to no avail. Also, hate where the new google search bar is located – can't put it at the top any longer. My phone is extremely sluggish now and doesn't update my email or facebook automatically anymore even though I went back into settings and sync and re entered all my info.
Any one else's phone having issues AFTER the update? Loved my Droid until the update! grrrr!!!:-(
December 11th, 2009 at 10:12 am
Not sure if this will help but my pop-up to upgrade came up and then left because my cell wasn’t plugged into the wall. I couldn’t find the notice again so I turned the phone off and back on after I had plugged it in and it showed up. So you guys might want to try restarting if you didn’t get the upgrade notice.
December 11th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Since the update, my Droid is WAY sluggish… unlocking the phone, starting aps, using the keyboard, etc. It keeps getting hung up, pauses for a second or two, then runs. I haven't really had any problems with the enhanced features, but the new update has made this thing frustrating to use, and I've been in love with it the two weeks that I've had it.
December 12th, 2009 at 2:07 am
All this talk about all the new upgrades and I can still not hang up the damn phone without a major operation. I think they still sell it as a phone. If this is a fact it should at least hang up. I could care less about a GPS map as I got that on two vehicles. BTW I got the upgrade two days ago and the camera is better but if the damn phone does not improve it will be a boat anchor.
December 12th, 2009 at 3:11 am
That is definitely one of the situations with having an all touchscreen device, with no relevant hardware keys. While there are phones out there that can handle this very well, I'm still one of those people who would prefer to have a hardware 'answer' and 'end' option. Just so much easier that way.
December 12th, 2009 at 3:37 am
Got mine late last night. Today noticeably improved battery life!
December 12th, 2009 at 6:39 am
Crashed my phone…… it was a week old and my local verizon location had to give me a replacement. It may have been just a fluke but now i am a little leery of downloading the update on the replacement phone.
December 14th, 2009 at 1:14 am
Like the new update, definitely faster, have had keys locks up while texting a couple of times, haven’t noticed battery life, and the Google widget did bother me at first
But I went to make a call today and all of my contacts are gone! Shows 5 out of about 200+ I have searched and cannot find anywhere! They are all still in my recent call log and. If I dial they come up and are still synched with fb. Etc..but where are they?
December 14th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
Did my update, it was a no brainer and fast. I have many bugs and issues ever since, its slower, things are missing, the browser acts like a POS.
I definitely do not like the update. I think I have more issues now then before the update.
I like the phone and hate it at the same time.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Got my a couple of days ago.
Noticed improvements, but nothing really major.
I do have a really weird bug though, that has me kindof surprised.
When I enter my contacts app, only 10 contacts (apparently they were chosen at random) are displayed.
It hasn’t deleted my contacts database, because if I go to the messaging client and type a person’s name, it still dynamically populates with all the relevant matches from all my contacts.
However, I can’t see them in the contacts app, and this makes phoning them a ridiculous hassle.
Anybody have this problem and/or know how to resolve it without losing all your contacts in the process?
December 16th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Get the update last week, and I love it! The battery life has nearly doubled, scrolling is smoother, and every action just feels a bit snappier.
For those concerned about the Google search bar being undocked from the top of the notification bar, that is part of the update. I like the change because it makes me less likely to click on the search bar when I'm reaching for the notification bar.
December 19th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Patrick, I have this exact problem, and came here trying to figure out how to solve it! I've checked all the settings and haven't found any solutions. Have you had any luck? Please reply if you do!
