Motorola DROID all set for OTA update by month’s end
December 5, 2009 | by Evan Selleck

Considering we covered the CLIQ’s update a few days ago, it should go without much effort that we let it be known to all you DROID users out there that your phone is on track to get a software update by the end of the month. Or, as a matter of point, in the “coming weeks”. This update isn’t 2.1, but actually 2.0.1 and it’s not packed with features. But, that shouldn’t be a surprise.
The update is meant to just fix some minor issues with the device, but the primary one seems to be that autofocus situation going on under the hood. We all know how much you love to take pictures with that 5MP camera, so any kind of fix is much appreciated. However, what might be even more important is voice quality, which is also said to get addressed within the update. While I personally haven’t had any real issues with the latter, I’m not going to shy away from an update, no matter what.
As the title implies, the update will roll out in an Over-the-Air fashion. Meaning you’ll hopefully get prompted at some point here “soon” that an update is available for your phone. If not, you’ll have to dig into the settings and get the update yourself, but that isn’t really a big deal. Have you had any issues with your camera, or even voice quality? After this update hits, and if it does indeed make the camera better, is this now your perfect phone? (If it wasn’t already, mind you.) Let us know!

i hope it fixes mine from crashing so much… still love the phone and better focusing is a plus.
What does your phone say when it crashes? Does it give you the standard "phone has force closed" blah blah nonsense? Or does it happen when you are utilizing a specific application? If so, is the application native to the phone, or one you've downloaded from the Market?
that's the weird thing, it doesn't say anything. it just locks up randomly and then restarts back to the motorola logo. it has locked up in the middle of a bunch of different tasks such as google talk, hanging up a phone call, gmail, and others. i thought it might be from the dock runner since it started doing it after installing that, but even after uninstalling that it still reboots randomly…
Since you've picked up the phone, have you ever done a hard reset to the device? Which means, with the phone still turned on, pulling the battery out of the device, waiting a few seconds, and then putting the battery back in. If not, I would try and do this and see if the restarting/crashing problem goes away. If not, then perhaps you should follow David's advice below. It might be time to get a new phone sent to you.
I had issues with crashes on mine as well. I wiped it clean and it still crashed. I returned it to the verizon store and got another and it has not crashed since.
That is very interesting. I'm starting to hear about this more and more.
Definitely looking forward to the update. Love the camera when it focuses. Could use better voice quality.
what happened to the 12/11 update that was detailed in the verizon bulletin?
It's quite possible that 12/11 is still a possibility. The mobile industry is known for using language to their advantage, and "coming weeks" could mean all sorts of things to Verizon. Except, you know, weeks. That word is open for interpretation, I guess.
Bstep – I had the same problem. I found online that many had had that problem. It seems that the problem was hardware related, and was limited to a particular batch of phones. I sent mine back for an exchange, and the new one hasn’t crashed once.
Thanks for that David, that might be great advice. That problem has indeed been reported by several customers, so at least it's not just you, Bstep.
sweet. i'll take mine in and see if they will replace. thanks for the heads up guys. i just thought it was something flaky in the software side of things.
Zhu zhu pets are at the top of my daughter’s Christmas list and I got lucky to find some at retail price. I used http://www.amzpricesniper to do it. It works pretty well. 2 pets for under $20 bucks!
This"update" removed a lot of features from the phone. When I purchased the phone, the ease with which you could retrieve email and texts…read and delete them from the screen that you reached by swiping the home screen to the left or right, was one of the things I really loved. It's gone! The home screen is reconfigured, clock, phone etc. NOT Convenient at all! Some other features are gone too.
These devices are very personal. When you purchase something you like it should not be able to be tampered with arbitrarily! Although there may be features that are enhanced, they should have permission of the person who actually purchased the device to take something from it.
Hello, I was scanning something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your perspective on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read earlier. I am still pondering over the opposite points of view, but I’m leaning to a great extent toward yours. And irrespective, that’s what is so great about modern-day democracy and the marketplace of ideas online.
