It was just a few weeks back when Google rolled out Google Maps Navigation for Android 2.0.
Now, in a little bit of good news, that navigation app is now available in the Market for anyone in the United States running Android OS 1.6 or later. Unfortunately that still does leave some out, namely those on Sprint, but my bitter feelings aside this does come as a nice surprise. And hopefully this will come to 1.5 with some additional time.
The one catch here is that the “navigate to” voice command feature is not available. But moving on to a more positive point, it was noted that this Market version does include the new Layers feature, “which lets you overlay geographical information on the map. View My Maps, transit lines, Wikipedia articles about places, and more.”
Now, if we could just get those remaining Android 1.5 phones bumped up, and yes I am talking about you Sprint.

There probably isn't any reason to update 1.5 with Google Navigation. For the most part, especially for Verizon and Sprint, the Android devices that are still running 1.5 are Heroes, and will be getting Navigation (not at all) soon enough.
Of course, the Moment is still left out to dry. But maybe Samsung will get on the ball and update their devices. That'd be fantastic.

There is an update for non-US users but it includes the same directions feature as the Google Maps web version rather than turn-by-turn navigation.

FYI: the navigation isn’t really an app, it’s an update to Google Maps. Just look for apps that need to be updated, and that sould do it for ya.

After installing the update on 1.6 and launching google maps, I was prompted to install a voice app before I could use it which happened to be a 4.25mb app! Now I find out there isn't even voice navigation but I still have to install that giant voice app to use the google map update? 4.25mb of wasted space!

then.. the how-to install the navigation on the G1:
It says US phones.
Is there no maps for europe or is it because of differences of the phone?

To bad I can't upgrade my new Motorola Cliq. $500 already obsolete.

You can't tell it to navigate by voice, you have to type in the destination, but there are turn by turn voice directions given to you. The voice app installs to the sd card so it doesn't take up any space on the phone. Try it out…I installed it on my G1 and it is awesome.

Thanks! The voice instruction werent working because I was basically sitting still in my office, once I tried it in the car, worked no problem! (Telenav would begin audio directinos instantly so I was a bit thrown off) GREAT feature! So long Telenav!

Once again other countries suffer so some unknown reason.. the maps are there so why can't the rest of us have the nav. So sick of not getting the apps that the US has, but it is fine when we spend our money on the same devices. This is no way to try keep loyal customers, so close to moving away from Android and I am a huge fan of it.

The nice people at xda-developers have produced a modded version of Maps 3.2.0 (the official update is 3.2.1) that enables navigation outside the US.
