Analysts estimate that Verizon sold 100,000 Droids during the launch weekend

We saw the build up, and we saw the release day excitement, but still many were left wondering just how many Droid smartphones Verizon was able to sell during that launch weekend.

Well, nothing has been officially released by Verizon, however analysts are estimating that magic number was about 100,000.

Of course, this in not exactly scientific, but the process to come up with that number involved taking into consideration that Verizon initially had 200,000 Droids on hand for the launch and that “most stores sold at least half of their stock.”

Certainly not the best smartphone launch, but certainly nothing to think poorly about. But perhaps a little more important is the look at the bigger Android picture. According to Mark McKechnie at Broadpoint AmTech Inc;

“Including other models, Motorola will sell 1 million phones based on Google Inc.’s Android software in the fourth quarter and 10 million in 2010,”

Now that is good news for Android. Of course, it does make me wonder just one thing — How many of those 100,000 people that purchase a Droid realize that it is running Android? Or what “running Android” means. Personally, I have at least one friend that picked one up and has no idea of what Android is by name, just what the phone can do.

    I bought a Motorola Droid on launch day, specifically because it runs Android 2.0.
