Best Buy now taking Motorola Droid pre-orders with instant discount

Best Buy Mobile is accepting pre-sales for the highly-anticipated Motorola Droid beginning today. Though the phone will be available next Friday, November 6, customers can assure that they are able to purchase a Droid by a reserving a unit at their local Best Buy. The big box retailer will offer the Droid at $199, which is an instant discount compared to the mail-in rebate offered by Verizon stores.

As I alluded to in the Droid announcement post, I hate mail-in rebates. I’m convinced that they are nothing but a ploy companies use to annoy customers into giving up on the discounts that they promised. Anyone interested in purchasing a Droid may want to skip the sucktastic mail-in rebate process and purchase the phone from Best Buy. Rather than make customers pay $299; cut, package, stamp, and mail-in a rebate; and then wait several weeks to get a debit card, Best Buy will let customers walk out with a new Droid for $199.99 and a 2-year agreement.

    I'll pass on the DRoid. I'm waiting on HTC dragon. Hopefully HTC will "get it" and allow for more onboard storage. Droid only has ~256mb for storing/installing apps since Google does not allow Android apps to loaded on SD cards. SD card is useless for apps!! Google, Verizon, and Motorola shot themselves in the foot on that decision. I see alot of these Droids being returned to Verizon.

    Agree on the storage issue–it was the main reason I rooted my G1.

    @iPhoneMilk,

    As best as I can tell, the app you linked to is for backing up a copy of applications to the SD card. The feature the previous commenters are looking for is the ability to install applications directly to the SD card, and run them from there.

    I keep seeing this misinformation being repeated everywhere. The core functionality of an app is stored in the 256MB space. If necessary, apps, like games, can store the rest of their data in the 16GB space. But most apps are very small so filling up the 256MB will take some effort on the user's part.

    What about those of us who have current VZW contracts, but are eligible for upgrade? Is it possible for us to upgrade at Best Buy?
