It looks like the previously rumored date of August 5 was accurate as T-Mobile has officially announced that the myTouch 3G general availability is beginning today.
Overall, aside from the actual date, the details are the same as what we have already seen with the pre-orders. In other words, the myTouch 3G is going to retail for $199.99 with a two-year agreement and will be available in black, white and merlot.
Despite, not being shocked by the general availability release details, T-Mobile does apparently have something fun planned in San Francisco for the official announcement.
“To celebrate its arrival, T-Mobile is aiming high and plans to launch an aerial spectacle in the sky over San Francisco. Today at noon PDT, 100 skydivers, each dressed as unique personalities to reflect the individuality of the myTouch experience, will colorfully parachute in synchronized formations over the city.”
Of course, if you are not in San Francisco, your excitement will have to come from just being able to head into your local T-Mobile retail location and picking up a myTouch 3G of your own.

I'm waiting for mine to show up. Android developers can now get a discounted myTouch at:

I got my device yesterday and I previously had the g1. Honestly there isn’t a huge difference besides memory and battery life….however its still a beast. Very nice looking as well. I bought merlot.
I ordered the mytouch. and it is not worth its price at all. they marketed this phone as if it was some marvelous piece of art when all it really is is the G1 minus the keyboard. the interface is the same. i was not impressed. the phone is slow…it freezes and not to mention its a pain to type on. i sent it back.
Two reasons for the pits. #1) After owning the T-Mobile Wing for 2yrs. And exspecting to watch streaming videos with no problems. What I got was freeze-ups during buffering with the highest speed
available on the wing. Of course no one told me at the time and purchase at TM that there was no tower in the coverage area in Pensacola,FL. But I was told that there coverage area was expandiNG. But after
$399 spent. Still no tower for Pensacola in 2yrs. #2) I up-dated my contract for a My Touch 3G. I ordered
it on line, and have it as I speak. You guessed it. After spending $299. Still no tower to accommodate the
now 3G. I talked with another TM represenative. And received the same old song and dance. Both phones are really great. But not if you live in Pensacola. Is there anyone in Pensacola; or any town, in any state
with the same situation? http://www.mytouch3gforum.com
Got the G2/Magic/MyTouch yesterday and couldn't be happier. After a long flirtation with getting an iPhone I just couldn't reconcile my hatred for AT&T's services, policies, and their ridiculous $500 fee for those who don't pass a credit check with flying colors (I did pass, however watching gainfully employed friends in the IT industry who need a smart phone for business reasons get hit with that fee rubbed me the wrong way). Meanwhile I received the MyTouch from T-Mobile with no extra fees despite the fact that I'd canceled a plan with them a few years earlier without paying their early termination fee. That sort of leniency and the great customer service I enjoyed while receiving it has earned T-Mobile a return customer.
I've always been a proponent of open source and the spirit of open source is all over Android. AT&T is a dinosaur in the new media age and Apple, while slick and likeable in general, is FAR too proprietary in their approach. Apple is on their way to making the exact same mistake with the mobile OS market that they made with the desktop OS market while Google is poised to "Microsoft" Apple into a niche player role all over again. This is coming from a web designer, mind, I have a lot of love for Apple in the desktop space but I'd rather not have a phone that I need to "jailbreak" just to use as I see fit.
i got the MyTouch yesterday and so far I love it. I thought that going from a physical qwerty board to the touch keyboard would be difficult and frustrating but it is actually very easy to use and get used to. Like the poster above me, I was considering an iPhone but I could not bring myself to get At&t service, because I have had them before and my experience was more than horrible. I think that the MyTouch was worth the money I spent.
