T-Mobile enlists celebrities for myTouch 3G commercials

T-Mobile
T-Mobile has thrown some advertising dollars at promoting the myTouch 3G, and they’ve enlisted the help of a few celebrities to do it. In a new spot highlighting the “my” in myTouch, the new Android device is seen adapting to the user as it passes through the hands of three celebrities: actor/comedian and The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg, Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, and stuntman/Celebrity Apprentice alum Jesse James. Take a look at the commercial below (video courtesy of HTC Source).
The celebrity factor is obviously designed to catch people’s eyes, and the myTouch is featured prominently to showcase its ability to change towards its user. From Whoopi’s comedic nature to Jackson’s zen-ness and finally to James’ crash and burn lifestyle, each personality is shown in the commercial. There’s also a line of people at the end to showcase that the phone can adapt to just about anybody. The final shots of the commercial kind of remind me of the Sprint “Now Network” commercials.
So what’s the verdict on the ad? Hate it or love it? We asked Android readers last week to dream up their version of a device/Android commercial and got a couple of interesting answers. Speaking of which, congrats to Yaniv, Joey, and Kiev for winning a gift certificate to MusicSkins.com, a website that sells artist-related and customizable G1 skins.

As my wife said (and we're long time T-Mobile customers); "Wow..! They finally got an ad right..!!" It's a well-done ad. And the myTouch is a pretty neat phone, too.
Typical american tripe advertising, that would not work in the UK.
Well, not much works in the UK. Obviously, tooth paste gave up advertising a long time ago. Not worth it.
The commerical is pretty boring. The music and background is right out of an Apple commerical – except that the iPhone and it's apps sell themselves. The Apple spots give you more info about the phone. The celebs are not that interesting. Whoopi, Phil Jackson, Jesse James? Really not that cool. If you want to see them get even more uncool … look at the tMobile website where they explain how they use their phones. Phil Jackson likes to take pictures of his hotel rooms. Jesse James … well, based on his interview, I don't think he actually owns or uses one. I also noticed that on the website there are about 60 apps available for the phone. Watch for the commercial with the Saturday Night Live Alumni – same concept…not funny or interesting. They put them in the same scenario as the previously uninteresting c-list celebs. With SNL'ers you could have come up with something funny or interesting. tmobile – you dropped the ball on this one. Alot of money for celebrity endorsements and I still don't know anything about your phone… nor do I care to find out. From what I've gathered so far… Apple has done everything better from the phone to it's advertising message.
Thing is, if you have an iPhone, you pay about $1,300/year more for dropped calls, old technology, and expensive apps. The myTouch, with the latest Android apps (over 9,000 – many are free), absolutely kills the iPhone. But hey, knock yourself out with your over-hyped expensive iPhone, since iconic status symbols are more important to you.
