The cost of owning a G1, as compared to the iPhone 3G S and Palm Pre

When purchasing a cell phone most people (myself included) only look at the amount of money that we have to shell out on the day of purchase and rarely consider the monthly fees that will make up the total cost of ownership. Thankfully we have someone to do that for us.
BillShrink has just recently offered up a nice comparison showing off the total cost of ownership of the G1 as compared to the Palm Pre and iPhone 3G S, sadly the G1 has not come in with the lowest price. That said at least it was not the most expensive, which in this case was the iPhone 3G S.
Of course, while these types of comparisons are neat to check out, they are not always entirely accurate and prices are always subject to change. Which in the case of the G1 has already happened, if you check T-Mobile the price of the G1 is down to $149.99 on contract. Not to mention that you can get it for as little as $97.99 at Amazon. Additionally, this cost comparision was done using a $99.99 calling plan from T-Mobile, which depending on your needs can be lowered significantly. Additionally, I think T-Mobile has has better calling options if you are looking for a family plan.
Bottom line, I would take this with a grain of salt, but at the same time it is nice to see it all listed side-by-side.

I think you need to re-do that for UK users! I got my G1 8 months ago, the phone was free (and still is) and I pay the equivalent of around $50 for unlimited data and text/mms If you do UK prices the results will be completely different!
oh, and we get an 8Gb SD card with it for free too
G1 Users can only install applications in the phones memory.
Not necessarily, with a little hack [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=…
Wow um I pay about $85.99 /month on t-mobile for unlimited data, messaging, voice. They need to research their plans a little better.
Zee, I have a G1 and install on to SD card using A2SD
another thing, 5 hour talk time? I don't think so, I don't even use voice and my G1 battery lasts about 10 hours and I can't take it out on an evening because the battery has drained during the day!
Thanks for the app idea, and you should check out a power management app to improve your battery life, I get about a 2-3 days without charging if I don't talk on it much.
Yes they do need to do some research because anyone staying with T-Mobile with an un-plan from Sun-Com still keeps unlimited for less then $85/month
How many people really need unlimited everything. While for Palm Pre this is the only option for G1 and iPhone you have choice. The monthly bill for my G1 is $65. I never get even close to finishing my 1000 everywhere minutes and the 400 SMS's. I paid $139.9 for my G1. The cost of owning G1 for me will be $139 + 24*65 = $1700.
2-3 days?! No way… is that with 3G, GPS and WiFi off?
I live in Denmark and have just bought a HTC Magic. Prices for that here: Price: 1299 kr or $245 Data plan with 100 MB included: 79 kr or $15 Unlimited data transfer: 199 kr or $37 And paying for texts and talking besides that. This is with a 6 month contract where I have a minimum spending amount of 399 kr or $75, after the 6 months I can spend however much I want each month.
