T-Mobile began the Cupcake roll-out for some users April 30th, but many others wondered why they had yet to receive the Over the air update to unlock many of the features that have had them salivating for months. T-Mobile USA today officially confirmed that Cupcake updates begin next week, starting Monday, May 11.
Though some users reported receiving the updates late last week, and even more installed it themselves, the firmware changes seemed to be isolated incidents rather than regional or random roll-outs. But an official announcement posted at the T-Mobile support forum reveals that the updates will BEGIN taking place on Monday. The message stated:
T-Mobile is delighted to announce the upcoming release of Android 1.5 with “Cupcake” coming soon to the T-Mobile G1! We plan to begin sending out the update starting the end of next week. As with previous software maintenance releases, the update will be randomly sent “over the air” to T-Mobile G1 customers. We expect everyone will have their update by the end of May.
T-Mobile also expects to post a video showing the updated features, though we’ve already seen plenty of walkthroughs and previews of what Cupcake offers. Either way, the end is almost in sight.
UPDATE: Here’s the official video added to the Android YouTube channel.

About time! Took them long enough, why the delay?
The Cupcake firmware wasn't officially done until a couple of weeks ago. They didn't explain why it took so long since the announcement.
As for the update, T-Mobile probably focused on Europe first because their competitors are releasing the Magic. The US might not be as much of a priority because they are the only option for the time being, so they don't run the risk of people switching to another carrier for the latest features.
I woke up this morning to find my G1 informing me of an update being available. I'm quite happy I can now select multiple messages in my gmail account and delete them.
The Onscreen keyboard is nice and a welcome addition.
